Russian-inspired living room design

It is common to think that the Russian interiors are those huge villas with brocade sofas, LED lighting under ceilings full of frescoes, and tacky portraits of owners stylized as 18th-century admirals. However, they are a good option for people who do not like modern minimalism. Keep reading to check, how to design an elegant and stunning living room. Where did the Russian interior design style come from? The style in the Russian Empire was shaped by the aristocracy and the Tsar, only one who could afford beautiful interiors with splendour. Russian aristocrats were very timely when it comes to design. They entrusted interior decoration to interior designers who combined European styles with tradition. Moreover, a large part of the population is Orthodox. The houses of most Russians were often decorated with icons hanging on the walls. In the countryside, they were simply written on wood. In rich houses, icons were hung finished with gold flakes, and the figures depicted on them were “dressed” in dresses made of precious metals. The colours and richness of patterns in the interiors also derive from the Orthodox Church tradition and the Orient.   You can also notice the influence of the Orient, as over the centuries the Russian Empire has absorbed some of the Eastern customs and traditions. For example; strong colours, a love of splendour, hand-woven textiles. The famous carpets hung on the wall also come from oriental traditions. Interior design in the style of Tsarist Russia is a perfect choice for anyone who loves luxury, gold upholstery and splendour. However, this one-of-a-kind style is not only suitable for palaces or villas, but can also work well in an apartment. Everything depends on good composition and selection of appropriate accessories, colours and furniture. So what are the characteristics of Russian interiors? First – dark wood The Russian style, or rather Byzantine-Russian, originated from the sacral architecture of the Russian Empire, which developed from the mid-19th century until the fall of the Tsar in Russia. It is characterized primarily by magnificent decorations and design. Heavy, dark, wooden furniture and floors are characteristic elements of the arrangement in the spirit of Tsarist Russia. Dark floors bring a lot of elegance to the interior. Dark floors can be matched with dark, massive furniture, characteristic for tsarist homes. Also interior doors, massive, wooden or covered with wood imitation veneer, should be covered with a dark colour. Colours and accessories Dark wood of floors and furniture can be overwhelming, so it’s best to choose bright wall colors. However, this does not mean that Russian interiors are subdued and monothematic. Quite opposite! Russian interiors are characterized by a strong folk influence, visible in colourful curtains or fabrics. Linen curtains, richly decorated with beads, napkins and lace, rich patterns on upholstered furniture, will complement the decoration of the interior, give it warmth and comfort. Besides, a crystal mirror and gilded frames will be also a perfect match. Every Russian living room also won’t look complete without a thick rug with traditional patterns, preferably hand-made. An important accent of every house in the style of Tsarist Russia will certainly be a stove made of decorated tiles. In a modern interior it can be replaced by a tiled fireplace. A stove in Russia is the true heart of the house, a place of rest and casual conversation with the household members. A beautiful, traditional chandelier will also complete the design. Harmony Let’s not exaggerate with details – the arrangement in the spirit of Tsarist Russia should be above all harmonious. Appropriate proportions are most important – between space, heavy furniture and decorations. This will allow to achieve the effect of beauty, elegance, but also warmth and comfort. Strive for simplicity and naturalness. The boundary between a real Tsarist spirit and a noisy house overloaded with decorations is very thin. We really hope you liked our article. Marquetry: a technique to preserve in interior design projects

Furniture marquetry art looks like embroidery on a serviette or a folk cut-out. It is impressive for its careful craftsmanship and beautiful patterns. Associated with Louis XVI and decorations from beautiful palaces and halls, the art of marquetry returns to favor. In this article, we will introduce you to what this fine art is really about. What is the marquetry technique? Marquetry is a decorative technique used in artistic craftsmanship (in furniture and small items). It is a technique of laying patterns consisting of pieces of wood (often veneer), metal, ivory, concrete, marble, etc. on the surface of the decorated item. Another kind of marquetry is intarsia, a technique of decorating furniture that consists in placing patterns of many types of wood on its surface. The famous 18th century master of marquetry, Giuseppe Maggiolini, used up to eighty-six types of wood. The furniture you can now admire in the Versailles palace came out of Andre Charles Boulle’s hand. At the king’s request, the artist created cabins inlaid with tin, copper and glass, ebony inlaid chests of drawers with a refined motif of plant thread, libraries with relief marquetry, i.e. wood decorations with gilded bronze reliefs. But this art was known much earlier. History The sources of this technique lie in Muslim art. Mirahs decorated with this technique appeared already in Egypt during the Fatimids in the 12th century. The technique was already known to the ancient Romans, who used different types of wood, metal, glass and stones to decorate furniture. Findings from Pompeii and Herculaneum prove that already in those days it was a very advanced technique. In Europe, this technique was introduced in France in the 16th century by Jean de Verne. Marquetry elaborated upon Florentine techniques of inlaying solid marble slabs with designs formed of fitted marbles, jaspers and semi-precious stones. This work, called opere di commessi, has medieval parallels in Central Italian “Cosmati”-work of inlaid marble floors, altars and columns. The technique is known in English as pietra dura, for the “hardstones” used: onyx, jasper, cornelian, lapis lazuli and coloured marbles. Researchers still find beautifully decorated sarcophagi and statues from ancient times. The oldest marquetry object found so far is an Egyptian cedar sarcophagus from four thousand years ago. In ancient times, the surface of wooden furniture was lined with marble, ivory and yew wood. Materials and decorations The most commonly used material is wood, but this technique may include bone, ivory, turtle-shell (conventionally called “tortoiseshell”), mother-of-pearl, pewter, brass or fine metals. The simplest type of intarsia uses only two sheets of veneer. Those are glued together and cut with a circular saw to form two contrasting plates of identical design. The most common decorations were anthemin – stylized honeysuckles, fruit and birds. But also coats of arms, suns, monograms. In the Baroque, the decorations grew to genre scenes, in the Empire and Biedermeier era geometrical patterns dominated. Modern marquetry Now this noble technique is returning to grace. Today, many furniture designers look with interest at the marquetry and try to create modern furniture, but crafted in the spirit of this old and forgotten technique. An example of an interesting use of marquetry technique is Amsterdam Residence, designed by a prominent designer, Marcel Wanders. Inside we can see a beautiful wooden parquet floor with inlaid decorations. It seems that artists and designers more often use old craftsmen techniques. We can expect more of such spectacular returns in the future. MODERN FURNITURE DESIGN TO INSPIRE YOU That’s it. Now that your creativity is racing in your mind, this catalog will help you to bring together all your ideas to the table.

His futuristic approach to spaces looks a bit utopian but also very ambient. Andres believes, that as we continue to become more in touch with our moods and emotions, spaces should be designed around how they make us feel. How to style a chic coffee table?

A coffee table is an essential part of any living room or lounge. Together with a sofa or armchairs, it provides a relaxation and tranquillity zone for all the residents. The character of the interior slightly imposes the style in which the table should be. But maybe sometimes it is worth to go a little crazy and choose a modern table for a classic sofa? How to choose the perfect coffee table? To choose the perfect coffee table for your living room, you must first define its role and consider the needs of the residents of the house. This will allow you to estimate what size to look for, whether you want the table to have a shelf for newspapers and books or whether you are looking for a simple solution. If you need space to set up a tray with hot drinks or space for frames with pictures of your loved ones, a small table is enough. If you care about welcoming guests, choose a larger piece of furniture. The coffee table is most often matched to the rest of the furniture in the living room so that it forms a coherent whole with them. This doesn’t mean, however, that these elements have to have the same stylistic line. It is also important to match the size of the table with other furniture and the size of the living room. Too big tables can completely dominate the space, while too small tables will die in the crowd of other furniture. Which style to choose? Depending on the style of the interior you can choose either a classic table or a piece of furniture with a more glamour design. Coffee tables can be also made from pallets or wooden blocks. Scandinavian-style interiors are usually decorated with wooden blocks, which play the role of a full-value living room table. The wooden coffee table fits perfectly into both classic interiors and fashionable arrangements in boho, ethnic, and scandi style. Natural wood and its derivatives, such as rattan, bamboo, and veneer, are a universal raw material. Wood perfectly warms the interior and makes it feel cozier. For delicate and subtle interiors you can choose a transparent modern table, which, remaining “unnoticed”, will perform its function perfectly.  In such rooms, small tables, especially those with sharp shapes, will look perfect. Those made of cold marble or glass will give the interior class and elegance. The modern character of the living room will also be achieved through original forms such as wire and openwork bases, a combination of metal and glass, or the use of mirror tops. When choosing a table for your living room, you can bet on the unique design, which will enrich the interior and give it a unique character. You can also go with simple forms, which will complete the interior design in the classic style, but without coming to the fore. You also need to decide whether you prefer a single table or a set of several tables, often connected. One-piece coffee tables will go well with a small sofa, while the sets will look great in large corner living rooms. How to style your coffee table? If you are planning to arrange your perfect coffee table, it is a very good idea to start the whole creative process from the tray. It usually serves as a basis for decoration. You can place various decorations and accessories on the tray, and the tray itself will serve as a so-called styling frame. When choosing the right tray for a coffee table, you should make sure that it contrasts with the color of the tabletop, because it will make the arrangement more distinctive. You can put everything on the tray, from decorations to candles and flower bouquets. A basket or a decorative bowl also looks great. It can even be a very minimalistic, bamboo basket or a more impressive bowl (preferably with some beautiful paintings on it). The basket or bowl will be perfect for such decorations as fresh fruit, dried flowers, or decorative pebbles. You can also put your favorite newspapers, lanterns, or plants on the table. However, as the name suggests, this is a coffee table, so remember to leave some free space. After all, the table is to serve you as a stand for any drinks or books that you are reading at the moment. We really hope you liked our article.
