Expanding upon his technical skills, he parlayed his love of artistry and fashion into decor and quickly gained notoriety in the interior design world. Nate believes that your home should tell your story.  His job as a designer is to tell his client’s stories through the things they choose for their home. What they’ve seen, who they’ve loved, and where they hope to go next. To him, decorating is the pursuit of what could make a room more interesting, more harmonious, better, what can be discovered, unearthed, combined. Nate and Jeremiah Berkus believe that the things you love the most should be collected and assembled in one place. Jeremiah believes that your home is your opportunity to showcase not only where you’ve been in your life, but also who you are now and, most importantly, who you hope to become. JBD is committed to introducing people to an entirely new and exciting side of design, a side where rules can be broken and spaces can be sexy and vibrant. Nate and Jeremiah Berkus also work together and were commissioned to transform a stately but somewhat dour Tudor house built in 1925 in L.A.’s Hancock Park neighborhood. Their client was Brian Robbins, president of the Nickelodeon network. The goal was to make the house more appropriate for a modern family—something friendly and warm. And they managed to make it fresh, new and dreamy but still true to its roots. In 2018, Nate and Jeremiah Berkus successfully debuted their exclusive furniture line with Living Spaces, featuring beautiful, timeless and transitional pieces for the modern home. With this furniture collection, they both wanted to give people the freedom to experiment and to explore elements of design they hadn’t before. We really hope you liked our article. Utah Center Table, A Special Edition

The authenticity of our designers’ creations comes from the ability to have a watchful eye to everything that surrounds them. They are artistic creatures addicted by unique design experiences and their inspirations come from lots of different places, namely from Nature.Today’s article features a very Special Item from Hommés Studio Collection and we’ll show you the story behind the design of “Utah Center Table, A Special Edition“. The peculiar shapes of Moab pools in Utah desert were the starting point of today’s Hommés Studio design journey. Some inspirational details of this dream landscape were triggers for the creative process of this unique coffee table.  Why is this place so special? In the midst of the barren desert in Utah, is a collection of startling beautiful electric-blue ponds, creating a strange, otherwordly landscape. The bizarre ponds provide a brilliantly blue contrast to the barren, red, Moab desert that surround them.Brine is drawn out of the mines to the surface and fed to the colourful pools, where the evaporation process begins. The difference in the shades of blue is related to the amount of water that has evaporated.A colour palette created by nature that truly inspired our design team. “Sometimes is like forgetting the true meaning of something that already stands. Shaping it with another form, another meaning, making it last, making it unique.”  Why is this coffee table so special? Besides being the perfect element for a contemporary living room design, this centre table’s top can be customized with a large variety of stones. This concept came from the unique Evaporation Lakes scattered across the Earth, each one with its own colour palette and authenticity. The Utah Centre Table Special Edition is a good coffee table idea for a high-end residential project that really wants to keep a nature-inspired vibe and combine it with a luxury modern vibe. How to Mix Vintage and Modern Decor Items Perfectly

Are you looking for an eclectic look for your home? Mixing vintage and modern decor items can be the best way to do it. If you want to create an eclectic or lived-in look in your home, mix vintage and modern pieces in a room is one of the simplest ways. Combining vintage with modern can make a space look like it has evolved over many years. This will also add sentimental value and make any home unique by stimulating a sense of nostalgia. But a balance has to be created to make it look elegant rather than untidy if you want a space that combines modern trends with inherited, vintage, or antique designs. No matter your home style – from minimalist to maximalist, there are many ways to mix your favorite vintage home decor with your current layout. Keep reading this article to learn how to do it in the best way. Tips To Mix Vintage And Modern Decor: 1. Determine the Overall Feel and Color Palette The first step for a great interior design that mixes old and new decor is determining the overall feel you want. There are many options: elegant, fresh, lived-in, relaxed, classic, or unorthodox. For that, it´s good to search for references and save your favorites – a good way to do it is by using Pinterest and creating a board with your inspirations; it will be much easier to decide what you most love. Next, decide on a color palette. In that topic, choosing a color that helps highlight your furniture and accessories without overwhelming the space is important. A neutral palette is a good option if you’ve lots of interesting individual elements. When mix vintage and modern, there isn’t such a need to add dramatic color to your walls. 2. Create the perfect backdrop for your design High ceilings, fabulous windows, and original features usually provide the perfect backdrop to any design. This can be achieved in less architecturally interesting spaces, though. Adding raw elements such as exposed brickwork, weathered textural wall finishes, and classically styled fireplaces will help you achieve the desired look. Integrating vintage pieces and large contemporary art will impact smaller rooms. To maximize the sense of space, be careful not to over-clutter the design and keep window treatments to a minimum. 3. Mix Vintage and Modern Successfully While mix vintage and modern items, you want the room to feel cohesive. To ensure your rooms are stylish and not chaotic, every individual item used must be of good quality. To allow each to be appreciated, combine and group pieces. Getting the proportions of each piece right is important to how furnishings relate to one another. Oversized designs are generally better than undersized ones. Pendant lighting, for example – some of the most impressive designs combine vintage chandeliers and classical mirrors with contemporary seating. There’s something as important as the actual items: how you use them in space. An effective eclectic scheme should be theatrical in style. To achieve this, you can re-purpose some of your favorite items: turn an old ladderback chair into a bedside table or a vintage suitcase into a coffee table. 4. Find Balance Be creative with furniture and create a unique look by upcycling vintage pieces. To achieve a piece that bridges the gap between styles, use contemporary fabrics and colors. While mixing different styles within the same space, you should find a balance between the number of pieces used. It’d be good to distribute designs, so they aren’t grouped in their periods or styles. If you have inherited a vintage piece of furniture, try finding a few accessories from the same era to tie it in. 5. Use textures and layering Vintage pieces can be a great addition; however, too many can create chaos. Mix them with smooth, unblemished surfaces and silky textures to get them right. Try a new silk cushion on a distressed leather chair, for example. Introduce natural textures like leather, faux fur, wool, and linen to create a more relaxed feel. To bring the look to life and achieve a cozy environment, layer sumptuous throws and cushions and incorporate a range of lamps. 6. Consider using the 80/20 rule There is a rule to help to activate a flawless balance between modern and vintage items that says to use 20% of vintage to 80% of modern items. This rule can help you to find the perfect interior. Even though we are calling it a rule, no one knows your home better than you – so feel free to decorate in your way. 7. Mix Styles Another important highlight to point out when mixing vintage and modern decor items is the mix of styles – don´t be afraid to combine different inspirations to activate the perfect look. You can find vintage pieces from art deco to mid-century to complete your look. 8. Find the balance between furniture and decor Lastly, it´s important to remember that to activate the perfect balance between vintage and modern decor items, it´s also important to pair it with the furniture choices in the room to have a flawless combination and an integrated layout. – a good option is to choose modern furniture and mix it with vintage accessories to make your home decor unique. The furniture will add a touch of modernity that perfectly matches vintage and modern pieces. Amazing Redesign of 1925 Tudor by Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent

This year an amazing duo of famous interior designers – Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent rocked the world of architecture with their amazing Californian project called “Hancock Park Estate”. But this dreamy house full of light and energy hasn’t always looked like today. It was originally a Tudor house comprised of small, dark rooms built in 1925, before the era of modern indoor-outdoor living that California is known for. Follow the article to check how they managed to turn the old, dark and grumpy house into a spacious and happy living space. It seems like the collaboration of this couple of two very talented designers was a wonderful idea. Nate Berkus is one of the most-known American designers, who established his award-winning interior design firm at the age of 24. He specializes in transforming houses and apartments into magnificent projects. When he designs a home, his main goal is to tell a story of the owners life through things that they choose for their houses. For him, home is simply a collection of the things that we love and value most in life.  Nate’s partner on this project – Jeremiah Brent is also his husband. Unlikely Nate, Jeremiah entered the design world through furniture design. After founding his design company in 2011, he has transformed countless homes, restaurants, and public spaces across coasts. Featured in publications such as Domino Magazine, Architectural Digest, and Harper’s Bazaar, his work shows the effortless depth, fearlessness, and creativity behind his designs. As he says; “Your home is your opportunity to showcase not only where you’ve been in your life, but also who you are now and, most importantly, who you hope to be”.  The Hancock Park Estate is a Californian House owned by Brian Robbins – the president of Nickelodeon, and his wife Tracy James, who is a stylist. The couple along with three kids wanted to have a modern, bright house with a lot of open and common spaces so that they could enjoy spending time together there. But, the original Tudor from 1925 was a dark house with a lot of tiny rooms and corridors, so the designers were put into a challenge.  Nate and Jeremiah decided to “crack open” the house to create a more gracious floor plan, and invited the natural light in through replacing nearly all the doors and windows with iron & glass. They wanted to get rid of the stiffness of the house without changing it completely, so that it would lose its character. “The front door is the only original door or window we left. Every layer we stripped out opened up the house and gave it an entirely different presence,” says Nate.  The open spaces that they managed to achieve through consolidation of the smaller discrete rooms can be seen in the bright and spacious kitchen, living room and dining hall as well as the master bedroom.  In the living room, they decided to stick to the white and neutral tones, to create a spacious room full of light. As a result, space looks like it was made for family gatherings or lazy evenings in front of the fire. It features cozy Vintage Pierre Guariche armchairs that are facing the Lunarys Center Table from Hommes Studio. Even though the room is kept in one color palette, the choice of different textures and shapes makes is a perfectly balanced relaxation space.  The Hancock Park Estate is an intriguing mix of modern and contemporary pieces of furniture and decorations and the Tudor architecture. “The soft, curved lines of the furniture instill a sense of fluidity,” says Nate Berkus.  This house feels like a perfect harbour for a happy family. Every room looks invites to spend time in it and create unique memories from this lovely home. Both designers stated that it was a real pleasure to work for the Robbins family. “We really fell in love with these clients. They were the kindest, most engaged people we’ve had the pleasure to work with, so we wanted to give them a home that truly reflects the beauty of their family”. No wonder that in such an atmosphere they’ve managed to create such wonderful house.  [Article written thanks to Architectural Digests’ text and photos]

The Release of Jack Davison‘s photobook

By HOMMÉS STUDIO If you are a photography lover, you probably have heard his name before. If not, Jack Davison is one of the leading portrait photographers in the UK, with recognizable works for The Times and British Vogue. Now he’s releasing his first edition, Photographs, a book that reunites a collection of images – personal, editorial and commercial – from his past ten years. Being asked about his child memories, Davison mentioned the time he started stealing his dad’s camera, photographing everything he saw. As a kid, he enjoyed odd and bizarre worlds and flying through his imagination, inspiring him to recreate fancy leaps which in the end added playfulness into his work. Although he tends to look to long-dead photographers to get his own influences, such as Alfred Steiglitz, Lee Miller, Man Ray and Walker Evan, he appreciates the work of emerging photographers such as Bolade Banjo, Chieska Fortune, Lydia Roberts and Sam Rock. He also gets his inspiration from his wife Agnes, his dog Radish, Salvador Dalí, the internet, and 1950’s street photographers. About the future of photography, in his opinion the process of taking pictures has been very simplified, and the idea of having our granny picking up an iPhone and taking the most incredible pictures feels quite exciting to him.Photographs is, in resume, a beautiful oversized monograph, a perfect book to display on your coffee table. For sure will be quite a theme to entertain your guests.

What is Memphis Design Style and Why It Is Back

What is Memphis Design Style? The Memphis Design Style, created by the Memphis Group, is one of the most instantly recognizable design styles. It blends Art Deco with pop art. The Memphis Design Style, created by the Memphis Group, is one of the most instantly recognizable design styles. It blends Art Deco with pop art. Whether you love it or hate it, the Memphis Design movement initiated by the Memphis Milano group is still relevant in today’s design scene. It is making a comeback among influencers and tastemakers. In the 1980s, a team of Italian architects and designers led by Ettore Sottsass, known as Memphis Milano, developed the retro design aesthetic known as Memphis Design. Because of their mutual dislike of the minimalist design style of the 1960s and 1970s modernism, the group of creatives set out to make postmodern furniture, fabric, patterns,  ceramics, and other decorative objects inspired by art deco and pop art, bonding streamlined geometry and electric colors. What is Memphis Design Style? After some introduction, the question still remains: What is the Memphis Design Style? The Memphis Design Style is a design movement born in the living room of architect and designer Ettore Sottsass on December 11, 1980. Sottsass invited a group of 22 Italian architects and designers to discuss the future of design. In common, they disliked modernism’s simplicity, its use of modest lines, bland shapes, and neutral colors. While the artists were brainstorming in Ettore Sottsass’s living room in Milan, Bob Dylan’s record “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again“ played repeatedly. ‘Memphis became the name for the Italian artists who defied the harmonious post-war aesthetic standards. ‘Memphis’ is a contemporary city in Tennessee, USA, and ancient Egypt’s capital. This duality goes hand in hand with Memphis Design Style aesthetics, which merges the opulence of art deco with the aesthetics of 1950s kitsch and mass-produced pop art objects. After the initial meeting, the Memphis Group gathered again three months later, in 1981, to share hundreds of furniture, patterns, textiles, and objects clashed with modernism’s balanced proportions. Therefore, the Memphis Design movement outlined the postmodernist aesthetic. Memphis Design Style Characteristics The Memphis Design style is a retro aesthetic that opposes brutalism and post-war architecture, interiors, and product design. In this manner, the Memphis Design style lends the streamlined geometry of Art Deco design and the electric colors of day-to-day objects. Memphis Milano is often described as kitschy and tacky because bright colors, geometric shapes, strong patterns, stripes, clashing hues, abstract designs, and plastic laminate characterize it. The initial critical reaction to the Memphis Group’s designs was not the best. The group’s use of conventionally ‘bad-taste’ plastic laminate and clashing colors challenged the widely accepted design standards of the time. However, we can now look back on the designs created by the Memphis Group and recognize that they were ground-breaking. They marked a complete separation from the dark, overly tasteful, and serious design styles of the 1970s. Ettore Sottsass left the Memphis Milano group in 1985. The collective of post-modernist architects and designers disbanded in 1987 because it became challenging to parallel their designs’ initial commercial success. Fast-forward, the Memphis Design style is back. Over the decades, Memphis Milano’s bold aesthetic has gained numerous influential supporters, including figures from the fashion world. Karl Lagerfeld was so captivated by the style that he filled his summer residence in Monte Carlo with Memphis furniture. Singer David Bowie was also a dedicated collector of Memphis pieces. After passing in 2016, his Memphis furniture and decor collection fetched over £1 million at a Sotheby’s auction. Why Is Memphis Design Style Back? Memphis design began to reemerge in 2005 in Los Angeles. A year before Ettore Sottsass’s death, LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) exhibited a survey of Sottsass’s designs. Right after this, interest in Memphis Design style began to grow. It influenced high fashion houses like Missoni, Karl Lagerfeld, and Christian Dior, and the latter’s 2011 collection helped kick-start the movement. Fast-forward to 2014, and Nathalie Du Pasquier, a founding Memphis Milano group member, designed a pattern collection for the fast-fashion giant American Apparel. Following these steps, in 2016, the brand Supreme released a series of skate decks and clothing designed by Alessandro Mendini, who participated in the first Memphis Design exhibit ever. A year later, the big box retailer West Elm joined the Memphis Design movement with a Du Pasquier-inspired collection designed by Brooklyn-based artist Dusen Dusen. At the 2022 Triennale Milano, the Memphis Milano Collective showcased more than 200 objects and pieces of furniture designed and produced from 1981 to 1986 in a Memphis Again exhibition. Christoph Radl curated the exhibition, highlighting that the Memphis Design style remains an iconic concept today.  Furthermore, the Memphis Design style became a predominant aesthetic in furniture and product design, graphic design, and interior design. Patricia Urquiola, Charles Zana, and Bells + Whistles are top architects and interior designers who design Memphis Design interiors. Almost 40 years since its influential debut, this design movement is back in vogue with its “Less is Bore” vibes. At its core, Memphis design style is about breaking rules. It mixes high and low culture, chaos and order, seriousness and absurdity. Even today, decades later, its influence can still be felt in fashion, interior design, graphic design, and pop culture. Now that you know what is Memphis Design Style and why it is back, embrace the trend. Discover 5 Memphis Milano projects to inspire your journey through the style.

Classical Interiors with a modern twist, a 2020 Interiors Trend Alert

Incorporating Greek and Roman art and architecture into interiors is trending for 2020, according to ELLE Decor. Greek and Roman art and architecture never really goes out of fashion. That’s why they call it classical, right? Great Karl Largerfeld said, on the launch of his last ever furniture collection in 2018, he was inspired by the perfect proportions of Greek columns.According to him, “they truly are the standards for beauty, fixed, once and for all. The Greeks didn’t know about bad taste.” That may be, but classical features need to be carefully thought out since they can look awkward out of context.  Just because a décor element is classically inspired doesn’t mean it’s nice.Every generation has a new take on classicism and some work better than others. According to Rayman Boozer, the American interior designer behind Apartment 48.“Classicism is back!” According to him “Busts and Grecian details add the perfect perspective to any contemporary vignette.Embrace these time-honored elements without taking them too seriously – playfulness is the perfect final touch.” Below you can see an illustration of the trend that shows a Greek bust wearing a yellow tie. This is classicism for the post-irony generation: teasing, respectful and often funny. There are different ways to approach contemporary classicism.Taking a reproduction of ancient art and displaying it in an ironic way is one of them.Another is using objects that come pre-programmed with humor. Classical accessories can be used in one of two main ways.It can be used through a statement piece – such as a classical sculpture that is an eye-catcher in the room. You can also use smaller pieces like bookends. Contemporary classicism seems to work best as part of a theme. It’s important to highlight that it’s not enough to place the bust on its own with nothing to make sense of it. Several classical elements should be brought together in a room to make the best out of this 2020 trend! We really hope you liked our article. Rockwell Group, Architecture and design driven by curiosity

Rockwell Group was founded in 1984 by David Rockwell and led by partners Shawn Sullivan and Greg Keffer, with headquarters in New York City and offices in LA and Madrid. They provide services like architecture, interior design, set design, product design among many others. The group won countless awards, including Designer of the Year, Best Hotel, Coolest Use of Technology, Best Scenic Design, Best Architectural Installation/Pop up. They are also included in Architectural Digest´s annual “2020 AD 100” list of top talent in architecture and design. Innovation is in their DNA as we can see in their LAB projects, like “Lawn”, a sloping green space stretching through the national building museum’s great hall. Another example is The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, one video projection featuring dancers that respond to guests. They design products from surface and floor coverings for Maya Romanoff, Shaw Hospitality Group, The Rug Company, and Jim Thompson, to furniture for Stellar Works and Knoll. Craft, customization, and luxury are what define their furniture collections. In terms of interior design projects, you can find a wide range of gems. It’s worth highlighting 15 Hudson Yards, the first residential building to open in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards. Designed to LEED Gold standards, the 88-story, 910-foot-tall tower anchors the southeast corner of Hudson Yards and boast stunning views of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline. While the views are breathtaking, the interiors are just as beautiful, with common spaces featuring silver oak floors, Portuguese limestone walls, and modern furnishings by masters like Finn Juhl. The approach is based on modern elegance and clean lines, with a rich material palette—neutral enough to appeal to residents with different tastes, though unique and chic through the detailing.
