London Design Festival 2021: A Guide On Art and Events

London Design Festival 2021 19th edition happens in September from 18 to 26 and this year’s edition promises to rediscover the whole city. This year’s program features both online and offline events which include talks, installations and exhibitions from top and emerging artists, designers and architects which you can visit across the city with a reinforced program on London’s Ten Design Districts and Victoria & Albert Museum. For interior design professionals, London Design Festival 2021 debuts an event that will steal your attention – the first edition of Design London is taking place at Magazine London on 22-25 September. Discover the things you must do and see at London Design Festival 2021 below. EXHIBITIONS AND INSTALLATIONS MEDUSA, SOU FUJIMOTO AND TIN DRUM Medusa, a Mixed Reality installation (the first for the Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto) examines structure, nature, and visualization, through elements of light, sound, nature, and architecture that responds to movements of audiences in the space; it creates a living design to prompt us to think about space, climate change and the role of nature in modern life.  Produced by Tin Drum in collaboration with acclaimed Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, Medusa is a groundbreaking new installation showcased at The Raphael Court at the Victoria & Albert Museum while the London Design Festival 2021 edition occurs. THE CUBE, HENNING LARSEN AND VELUX The Cube is an architectural installation by Danish practice Henning Larsen with Velux, designed as ‘a sanctuary where Londoners can unplug, unwind, and let the combination of daylight and fresh air put their mind at ease’ at Observation Point along with London’s South Bank during London Design Festival 2021. Visitors to the installation are encouraged to enjoy a “moment of calm” within the structure. Such a moment will be supported by a bespoke soundtrack from Danish musician Kasper Bjørke, which will recreate sounds of nature like birdsong and wind. BRING LONDON TOGETHER, YINKA ILORI Bring London Together, concept by Yinka Ilori is a temporary public art project, which is part of the Mayor of London’s Let’s Do London domestic tourism campaign and supported by Bloomberg, will unleash color onto pedestrian crossings on Tottenham Court Road in Camden and in the City of London in spectacular public artwork. The project will also engage with the local community, inviting them to participate in the project. Beginning on 20 September, across two days of the London Design Festival 2021, volunteers will be invited to paint the Queen Street pedestrian area and help bring the artwork to life. On Tottenham Court Road, a variety of events will be hosted over the coming months, in addition to digital offers, to support the local community and visitors to engage with and enjoy the artwork. BETWEEN FOREST AND SKIES, NEBBIE WORKS An installation taking over the fountain of the Victoria & Alberts’s John Madejski Garden during the London Design Festival 2021. Between Forests and Skies by emerging architecture practice Nebbia Works is an immersive, low-carbon aluminium pavilion using a minimal amount of material to demonstrate its expressive and structural qualities. Supported by low-carbon aluminium specialist En+ Group, the pavilion comprises a self-supporting structure crafted from a single sheet of metal, cut and bent to create shade over the courtyard, making for a poetic space suspended between sky and water.  MELLIFERA: THE DANCING BEEHIVES, ARTHUR MAMOU-MANI In celebration of the beehives atop Fortnum & Mason, French architect and designer Arthur Mamou-Mani has partnered with the department store for a new installation in its famous atrium. Mellifera: The Dancing Beehives features 3D printed beehives, which will “swirl and dance” around the space. The installation aims to highlight the need for rewilding in urban spaces – and encourage more projects like Fortnum’s beehives, which help boost biodiversity and pollination in the city. Each of the printed modules is made from a material containing fermented sugar and is fully compostable “in the spirit of the circular economy”, London Design Festival 2021 organization says. Each piece will be available to purchase after the festival. THE FUTURE OF HOME The Future of Home showcases the work of 20 Scottish designers from 15 Scottish design studios at the London Design Festival 2021. The collection includes furniture, lighting, textiles, and collectible craft, all made from sustainable and experimental materials where possible. The show has been curated by Edinburgh-based studio Local Heroes, and will feature a showroom demonstrating the “experimental processes and emerging concepts” which may make their way into your home in the future. TALKS GLOBAL DESIGN FORUM This year’s Global Design Forum will take place in a hybrid format with live sessions hosted at the Victoria & Albert Museum and digital sessions online. There’s a host of talks slated for the festival, from across the design industry. The talks of this edition will be dedicated to approaching design as an agent of change and a way of unlocking the creative activism. Furthermore, the edition discusses circular economy and how designers can make a change in industries like food, fashion, and plastic. DOODLE TALKS South London-based creative organization Rye Here, Rye Now is teaming up with Peckham Levels for a two-day mini-festival within the wider London Design Festival 2021 celebrations. Doodle Talks and produced in collaboration with Drawing People Together, the event is designed to show off the “vibrant local creative community” found in the area. INTERIOR DESIGN TRADESHOW DESIGN LONDON Design London is a trade show that debuts at London Design Week 2021. The first edition of Design London is billed as the next big curated tradeshow for the interior design industry since it gathers furniture, lighting and contract interior brands. In addition, the Design London trade show is said to be the “largest destination for contemporary design” at LDF 2021. The showcase will be on display at Magazine London, a brand new venue on the Greenwich Peninsula. Artifort, Campari, Fritz Fryer, Loft Furniture Ltd, Naos, Secolo, and Studio Effe are just some of the names you can find at Design London fair. Beyond the trade exhibition, the four-day event will also play host to a series of talks under the name Discussions

Colorful Kitchens That Brighten The Heart Of The Home

If the living room is a place of tranquility, inspiration resides in the kitchen, in this case, in these colorful kitchens. Stone islands, splash-backs, and glossed cabinetry — this is the stage for our innovation, the theatre in which we perform that most foundational act of the home. Dolce & Gabbana Casa – First Home Collection Finally Launched

With the end of August the Dolce & Gabbana fashion show had its place in Venice. This year, the Italian brand decided to launch the first-ever home collection at Alta Moda couture show. The chic collection of Dolce & Gabbana Casa includes lots of colourful details. We can admire seating, dining or cabinetry. Each element is adorned in one of four signature motifs: Mediterranean Blue, Carretto, Leo, and Zebra. Animal Prints and Carretto The Scuola Grande della Misericordia is a building of an extraordinary beauty. This year it was a background for the new Collection of Dolce & Gabbana Casa. The ground-floor of Scuola Grande della Misericordia floats in a sea of leopard print, sultry lighting and a cocktail bar. The intention on that floor clearly is to present the Italian way va-va-voom vision. What is more, it is also undoubtedly a celebration of the Italian craftspeople like it is visible in fashion collections as well. Dolce & Gabbana Casa is a showcase of the ‘fatto a mano’ (handmade). We can admire glass-blowing, hand-painted Sicilian ceramics, fine cabinetmaking, straw weaving, wood carving, and lush hand-loomed brocades all making an appearance. In crafting their creations, Dolce & Gabbana Casa collaborated with several Venetian heritage brands and artists. Starting with legendary Murano glassmakers like Barbini and ending with Salviatiluxury textile company Tessitura Luigi Bevilacqua. The eye-catching Carretto print is visible everywhere on the first floor of the building. For sure, the guests of the couture show were treated to an exuberant array of designs. The Sicilian folk-inspired motif dances up from the floor onto everything around – sofas, tables, cabinets and the entire kitchen. “We wanted an explosion of colors, emotions, scents,” Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana say “Each theme embodies a different lifestyle.” The famous fashion brand decided to move from small appliances and objects to larger pieces of an interior. The point was to not just accent a space but create one. The first floor also provides the perfect spot to display Dolce & Gabbana’s first foray into homewares. The limited-edition hand-painted fridges and a cute line of kitchen appliances for Smeg finds its place in this area. Dolce & Gabbana Casa is definitely vibrant, feminine and bold, meant for the maximalist. The collection will soon be available online. Eventually, the brand says, in stores worldwide. Humbert & Poyet created an Art Deco Design Duplex with Stunning Views

Monegasque interior architect Christophe Poyet and Parisian architect Emil Humbert designed an Art Deco Design Duplex In Monaco. They are known for their superb take on sophistication. So it is no doubt that their namesake firm has been writing the book on comfortable glamour for the past 14 years. Moreover, though Humbert & Poyet have organized projects from Dubai to Hong Kong to Mexico, this project is unique. This 8,600-square-foot duplex apartment is in their backyard. “Every apartment was in some way unique,” Humbert notes of the residential building at large. “But this one, the most unique of all.” “This is a 19-floor building,” Humbert says. The building is located at the center of town and includes sea views. The design firm did the overall interiors for the entire place. Humbert & Poyet started the project from the very beginning. They did the first studies maybe six years ago. The interiors are all shiny surfaces with careful attention to materials and comfort. The garage is a stunning exercise in contemporary design, while the duplex itself boasts impressive art. To help highlight the works, Humbert and Poyet installed most custom finishes, designing new patterns and moldings in the process. The result is a four-bedroom and bathroom interior that pays attention to the use of materials, wall treatments, and fittings. To further complement the clients’ art collection, designs such as a dazzling light fixture by the Bouroullec Brothers were installed. “We are most proud of the balance between our interior design and their collection. Everything works together. The challenge was to make the place full of life.” The entire home is stunning. Poyet confesses his preferences: “My favorite is the dining room because it is unique. The dark marble flooring gives a dramatic feel with the views of Monaco.” If you still want to collect inspiration for your interior design project, discover the Art Deco Style for Interiors board by Hommés Studio on Pinterest or read our article FEDERATION-ERA HOME IN MELBOURNE RECEIVES A ROMANTIC ART DECO DESIGN here. Victoria House, The New Modern Office Interior by Hutchinson & Partners

A London-based architectural studio, Hutchinson & Partners, recently added another modern refurbishment to the portfolio. The Victoria House clearly has become the new modern office interior. The renovation of the Victoria House was pretty extensive. The neoclassical property contains 27,000 sq meters of office space. On the exterior, the building is simple in form. What is more, it is also characterized by grandeur of scale. On the other hand, the modern office interior of the Victoria House is kept in a minimalist and very pure style. Along with the heavy exterior, it creates an impressive modern workplace. The studio wanted to update the historic marble-lined space. The goal was to present the new modern and minimal design. The Victoria House was covered in a new more contemporary layer. Victoria House Modern Office Interior On the ground floor we can find not only a marble and a travertine entrance hall but also a terrazzo staircase. The studio renewed the space in order to provide the pleasant modern office interior. Every interior of the Victoria House is decorated in calm, earth tones. The upper levels reveal a flexible office interior. The workspaces are suitable both for formal and informal meetings. Upstairs we can find the kitchens, libraries and lounges. The wide and spacious interiors of the Victoria House leave a lot of room to show off as it comes to the interior design. The Alsop Suite and The Long Suite provide spaces for the office tenants to meet with clients. Additionaly, the Heritage Suite contains a gym, multi-use studio alongside a lecture room, boardroom and meeting room suite. In every modern interior the team has used unique but simple furniture. We can find light-beige couches along with marble-glazed tables. In the Victoria House office interior there is a plenty of golden details and accessories. Moreover, every detail of a design in the Victoria House is amazingly precise and fits the office interior in the best way. Neutral Apartment Decor With A Sense Of Calm And Elegance

In this neutral apartment decor, Svetlana Evdokimova and Yegor Guslyakov from the Argento Style bureau meticulously checked the color of the walls so that it pleasantly set off the paintings from the owners’ collection. The founders of the Argento Style bureau have already worked with their customers more than once and did several projects for them. The family has lived in this neutral apartment decor for the last ten years, and when it came time to update the interior. The layout completely suited the owners, so they did not change it, but the content was changed entirely. The designers removed most of the interior doors, replacing them with massive portals that create the correct composition of the interior. “Customers asked not to use black and make the space light, airy, without unnecessary items,” says Svetlana.  The designers decided to take a light color as a basis, which was not easy. They needed a color that was not frankly warm and, at the same time, not cold. As a result, the designers found the same shade of white clay for the walls. Such a careful study of the interior’s basis was necessary to highlight the designer furniture and art, to have the perfect neutral apartment decor. A collection of paintings by Leonid Nikolaevich Semeiko settled on the walls of this apartment. Furthermore, the client chose the work of Anton Konyukhov together with the designers. They were looking for the final accent in the living room, and the canvas, covered with a special alloy, harmoniously completed the composition. The choice of furniture was a little more complicated – some of the objects in the sketches did not like the hostess. However, the designers were confident in their choice and decided to experiment.  They brought chairs from Christophe Delcourt for fitting, and the customer, seeing them live, immediately fell in love, and the chairs took their places in the living room. The same story happened with the 101 Copenhagen painted concrete armchair, only a place found in the master bedroom. A Los Angeles Style Amazing Apartment, But In Barcelona

An amazing apartment in the suburb of Barcelona’s Sarria-Sant Gervasi was created in a building of 70 with a rectangular shape and late rationalism. Catalan interior designer Roser Torres lives here with her two daughters.  The designer, as a child, always accompanied the mother to buy furniture, and she loved it. In addition, she enjoyed learning, seeing and looking for pieces in small antique shops, galleries, and auctions. The house is opened through a large hall that distributes two differentiated areas. The living, dining room, and kitchen face southeast, with a large balcony overlooking the patio. The bedroom area has views of the Collserola mountain range.  “I fell in love with the light and its magnificent terrace, but what moved me the most when visiting it was realizing that I came to this apartment to play as a child because a friend lived here,” she says.  Roser from Studio Nido completely renovated it together with the architect Eduardo Benítez Niño. The intention was to create a container as neutral as possible. They changed floors, ceilings, interior, and exterior. It is a warm, quiet, comfortable, timeless, but amazing apartment, with woods, marbles, metals, natural textiles, and a light color palette to enhance the luminosity and highlight the furniture.  Sabine Marcelis, for example, has taken several walls. Its sculptural mirrors and arty sconces counterpoint to packaged classics, such as the Garrido brothers’ silver-plated brass console in the entryway, a 1960s bench by Harry Bertoia, or the living room’s original Carrara marble fireplace. The key to the project was to build an amazing apartment that could be in Los Angeles: fresh, cheerful, and contemporary.  We hope you liked our article. Stunning Art-Filled Home by Thomas Kligerman and Francis D’Haene

An Art-Filled home created by Ike Kligerman Barkley and D’Apostrophe Design, which combines the classic lines of East End architecture on the interior with a stunning exterior landscape. Rarely does a new house fit entirely into a mature property right away. Materials require time to weather. Landscapes need an opportunity to repair. Gardens gradually fill in. However, when the creative team includes architect Thomas A. Kligerman and landscape designer Edmund Hollander the odds of immediate harmony rise considerably. Add to the mix a clever interior designer like Francis D’Haene, and the final composition can be orchestral. A few years ago, the trio was contracted to produce an airy retreat in East Hampton for a New York City couple with three children. The couple has a vast collection of contemporary art. The architect, a principal of the firm Ike Kligerman Barkley, took note of the neighboring 19th-century shingled houses and envisioned an estate with a timeless spirit. They wanted it rooted in tradition and a good setting for the art, but it could not be a shrinking violet either. The six-bedroom home has two personalities. The muscular exterior is pure Eastern Seaboard Shingle Style, with an imposing yet gracious symmetrical presence, including a double-gabled roof.  Generously scaled windows are framed by black shutters, contrasting the cedar shingles quickly aged to a patrician gray. Less traditional are the stainless-steel caps atop the five chimneys, which, along with a genial snaillike marble sculpture by Alma Allen installed at the entrance, hint at a more modern story inside. Masterminded by the Belgian-born D’Haene – whose firm, D’Apostrophe Design, conceives sacred spaces for clients in the worlds of art and fashion – the exquisitely crafted interior blends midcentury designs and personality-driven contemporary pieces.  The high-ceilinged living room comes invitingly down to earth, thanks to curved sofas, a trio of nestling India Mahdavi tables, and velvet-covered stools by the Campana Brothers. They like simple forms and natural materials. In fact, it was all about what would make these rooms feel warm. The art-filled home, built with the help of adviser Erica Samuels, reflects the same genial spirit. There are some bold pieces, but the works are welcoming to the eye for the most part. Serene works by Nan Goldin, Jacob Kassay, and John Houck offer quieter pleasures in the primary bedroom suite. The couple did not want the feeling to be heavy or so severe. In the outdoors, Hollander approached the grounds as an opportunity to create the rest of the composition. So along with old conifers and copper and fern-leaf beeches and majestic maples and linden trees that had grown over generations, he integrated new elements, such as orchards and vegetable and cutting gardens. “The landscape had to work for a multigenerational family,” Hollander says. “Something that would invite them to use different areas, in the shade and in the sun.” We hope you liked our article. Nevertheless, Olga Ashby was able to source vintage and custom-made objects and to materialize the client’s vision. HISTORIC APARTMENT IN REGENT PARK The gorgeous apartment in Regent Park is a renovated mansion. The apartment was sold with an elegant finish – white walls, high ceilings and tall French windows. These features keep the original 1820’s grand proportions and elegance. The high ceilings – almost 13 feet high – and the tall French windows permit natural light to invade every room of the house. As a result, Olga Ashby makes use of voluptuous furniture pieces both vintage and contemporary, and lavish tactile textures. The living room of this apartment in Regent Park has a neutral color palette. The nude hues are highlighted by golden details. A round sofa and voluptuous vintage Achilles Armchairs by Pool Studio surround a brutalist coffee table. This is complemented with modern side tables with brass and stone elements. Even though the three bedrooms of the apartment have smaller proportions, they still have plenty of natural light. In this manner, Olga Ashby creates intimate and cozy bedrooms. With a monochromatic color palette, Olga Ashby bets on a mixture of fabrics to create depth and texture. The master bedroom of this apartment in Regent Park in London is invaded by natural light, and it has a floor-to-ceiling upholstered headboard. The kitchen is all-black, something only possible in a house with a lot of light. The black marble and matches the dark grey cabinetry. These polished and sleek textures reflect a beautiful and elegant glow. Polished brass elements pop in front of our eyes, contrasting with the negative color palette.
