How Set Design Tells The Story in The New Cruella Movie

How the set design of the new Cruella movie starred by Emma Stone tells the story of the most wicked Disney villain. BAFTA-winners Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton created a unique aesthetic. In the rebellious 70’s London, Cruella de Vil, in the skin of Emma Stone, is dressed by the Oscar-winner costume designer, Jenny Beavan. Disney has made the debut of Cruella, a movie that is more for grown-ups rather than children due to The Devil Wears Prada resemblance. The Cruella movie tells the story of Estella, the orphan child that dreams about becoming a fashion designer but ends up being a puppy hunter. Nevertheless, design producer Fiona Crombie and set designer Alice Felton did their part when designing the movie’s set. Joining them to create a visual story, costume designer Jenny Beaven brings eccentricity and wilderness to Emma Stone’s character using Vivianne Westwood. Because ain’t nothing more British and rebel than Vivianne Westwood, right? SET DESIGN OF CRUELLA MOVIE While Jenny Beaven tells the story of Cruella throughout her clothes, they express the punk-rock movement of the 70s Londoner. They are also expansive, loud, and provocative. As a matter of fact, they contrast with the costumes of Baroness von Hellman, interpreted by Emma Thompson. Baroness von Hellman wears the 50s and 60s Dior-inspired outfits. Classy, conventional, in cream and brown hues. Cruella is the opposite in looks but not in villainy. Both costume and set design express this contrast between old and avant-garde, conservative and provocative. And, in the case of Estella, de young Cruella, between rich and poor. The young Cruella is poor, orphan, and aspires to be a fashion designer and live a life of abundance. Baroness von Hellman is a fashion designer and lives the life Estella wants to live. Both live under the roof of a Georgian-style home. However, Estella is surrounded by scarce comfort and a lot of molds. Contrasting to this, Baroness von Hellman lives in a modern palace. This contrast tells the story of the lost glory of the good old England, which eventually leads to the emergency of the punk movement. Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton are experienced in designing palatial sets since the duo signed The Favourite scenarios for Yorgos Lanthimos. Again space tells a story. In the studio of Baroness von Hellman, the upper floor allocates her office. From there, the Baroness overviews and controls her workers. This disposition states the status difference between the Baroness and the others, including Cruella. The character of Emma Thompson is rich, privileged, untouchable, and heartless. The office of the Baroness is actually a great display of the work of Fiona Combrie and Alice Felton. The due sourced vintage furniture from shopping trips in London’s Golborne Road, Chelsea, Kings Road, and the Sunbury Antique Market in Kempton Park. Their purpose was to become this fictional story a little more real—authentic vintage furniture to make it a little more real. So besides telling the story of nurturing Cruella, it tells the story of an impactful time in contemporary history. A mix of vintage and modern tells the story of Cruella and 1970s England. Both set design and costume design use pops of color. Regarding costume design, burning red is the color of choice by Jenny Beavan. Get inspiration for your next interior design project with fashion. New York Penthouse By Designer Lee Broom

This penthouse has become a home for Lee Broom and furniture, lighting, and accessories from his new and archived collections. Lee Broom knows a lot about scenery. As a teenager, he studied at the theater school, invented images for artists and decorations for the stage. Echoes of that time could be seen at his exhibitions, and now also in the designer’s new apartment. For each room of his 279 m² penthouses, Lee Broome wrote his script, but each one combines spectacular lighting fixtures and flowing curtains. Here, on the fifth and sixth floors of a former office building on White Street, there is a living room, a dining room, two kitchens, two bedrooms, a dressing room, an office, and two whole terraces.  Despite the building’s past, Lee Broom abandoned the loft-style and furnished the apartment with its inherent classiness. Thus, the living room welcomes guests with tranquil monochrome decoration and furniture. The accents are strewn with brass objects and graphic details. The centerpiece of the room is occupied by two White Street sofas designed specifically for this penthouse. They were born out of Lee Broom’s long-standing passion for symmetry, and due to the streamlined shape and sculptural armrests, sofas claim to be the main architectural objects of the space.  He maintained the same floating concept as the sofas, Tribeca Tables coffee tables in seemingly heavyweight black marble and travertine. Nevertheless, Lee Broom did not stop there and, in order to let more air and light into the room, he placed monolithic mirror panels on both sides of the fireplace portal. And then everything immediately becomes clear: this is not only a designer’s “second home,” but also a visual instruction on how to fit Lee Broom items into living spaces. “For many years, I have presented my work at exhibitions and installations, but now I am happy to show them in the living space,” says Lee Broome. “So this penthouse is not only a reflection of how I live and work but also how I see my furniture and light at home.” This is where the designer moved part of his growing personal collection of antiques and art – it can be seen throughout the house. One notable example is the bar, designed by Steve Chase in the 1980s, which found its place within the sea-blue walls of the dining room.  Complementing it are gray velvet drapes and new Musico chairs and table with hand-bent stainless steel pipes, of course from Lee Broom. The space continues with a large terrace with a breathtaking view of the World Trade Center. Furthermore, Lee Broom’s master bedroom on the second floor, also accessible by a floating staircase, has a terrace overlooking the Empire State Building. However, there is also something to see here: a 1970s postmodern bed in brass and stainless steel. According to the designer, this unique piece has long served as a source of inspiration for many of his projects. Nearby is Lee Broom’s office, which looks more like a small gallery of modern art. Opposite the carefully selected painting hangs another curious exhibit – Keith Haring’s leather jacket with a picture of a crucifix, which the artist made himself. Furthermore, such personal things for the designer, first of all, distinguish this space from any, even the coziest showroom. Preston Hollow Residence by Specht Architects

Preston Hollow Residence in the Preston Hollow neighborhood in Dallas, Texas. Preston Hollow Residence is a modern architecture project by Specht Architects. What divides indoors and outdoors is a thin and blurred line – the Bauhaus interior design is by Magni Kalman Design and the landscape architecture by David Hocker. PRESTON HOLLOW RESIDENCE Preston Hollow Residence is a modern architecture project that takes inspiration from the 1950s and 1960s modern architecture, namely the Oak Court project of de Edward Durell Stone and the Beck residence by Phillip Johnson. To the aesthetic of mid-century modern architecture, Specht Architects join the materials of brutalist architecture. As a result, this modern architecture project integrates vast greenery with concrete, steel, and glass. Like any other good modern architecture project, Specht Architecture’s project in Dallas balances indoors and outdoors. Landscape architect David Hocker surrounds the entire property with greenery, which perfectly integrates into the arid soil of Texas. The front yard of the house is a pathway in stone with few bushes and trees. These natural elements work as a frame to the imposing concrete walls of the façade. Once inside the property, greenery surrounds the entire house. At Preston Hollow Residence, the landscape links indoors with the outdoors and connects the several rooms inside the place well. Water is a critical element in this modern construction. As Specht Architects states, “Water helps link the exterior and interior spaces. A narrow channel, punctuated by cascading terraces and a gentle waterfall near the main entry, flows through the house and into the swimming pool. At night, lighting within the stream casts changing patterns on the textured walls”. To Specht Architects, it was equally important to design a sustainable home. Therefore, this modern architecture project has an integrated water recovering system used to water the yard. With the same concerns, the west side of the property is integrally concrete to keep an efficient amount of heat. BAUHAUS INTERIOR DESIGN Magni Kalman Design joins Specht Architects and landscape architect David Hocker to deliver a modern home. James Magni and Jason Kalman are modernists of excellence. Magni Kalman often designs modern interiors with streamlines and pops of primary colors. The interior of Preston Hollow Residence is no exception, yet it is exceptional. Respecting the architecture of the building, Magni Kalman Design creates a modern interior with Bauhaus design inspiration. The main dining room, for instance, is authentically a Bauhaus interior design specimen. The interior design studio decors the room a thick white dining table and red dining chairs with details in steel. On the walls, Magni and Kalman place three canvases with the three primary colors. Even though the interior of the house is luxurious, it looks efficient and functional. The amount of natural light inside the house allows Magni and Kalman to pursue this modern approach. The interior presents either vivid colors or neutrals with brown pigmentation, such as taupe. At Preston Hollow House, there is a unique sense of practicality. It is seen in the building’s structure and materials, landscape design, and interior decoration and finishings. City Garden – Best Residences By LICO Design

City Gardens are one of the high-end residences located in the central business district of Jiangbei in Huizhou. As the first residence of the host family to improve the quality of life, they entrust the whole case to LICO Design. With strong family values, broad horizon, artistic cultivation, and unique aesthetic taste, the host and hostess are engaged in investment and real estate marketing. They have always lived with their mother, children, and personal housekeeper. The atmosphere in their family is pleasant. The purchased property is two adjacent houses with an area of about 160 square meters. LICO is expected to create a new quality and ideal residence for this family. Based on the owners’ living habits and demands for quality life and LICO’s design concept of “50%DESIGN”, LICO’s creative team reshapes daily life with functional aesthetics as the core creative strategy for this case. It centers on the ideal life proposition of returning life to life to design an ideal residence with a simple, organic, and innovative sense. To take care of the life and living conditions of the elders with more convenience and continue the warm family atmosphere, LICO suggests that the host open up the two adjacent houses and merge them into one. In this way, the elders can be accompanied more by children. The public activity area of the family can be fully extended. The overall living space can be more open. Moreover, the sense of breathing is stronger, the spatial function combination and the living scene are more flexible, diversified and interactive. In terms of three-dimensional function layout, LICO team starts from the thinking point of “reshaping daily life.” Distributes the bedrooms, study rooms, and bathrooms with strong private properties on both sides of public activity areas. Small bed of hidden type is designed in the study room to facilitate the host without disturbing the family when he comes back home. What is worth mentioning is that a fireplace is designed at one end of the bathtub to warm the washroom in the winter and provide the owners with more delight. A partially suspended porch and audio-visual room are set nearby, making the family feel each other’s activities without interruption and keeping the hosts and guests’ privacy. The sitting room, dining room, and teahouse are semi-open. These spaces provide a relatively pure communication space for the hosts and guests. The kitchen, walkway, housekeeper’s room, and terrace are connected to facilitate the housekeeper’s daily work. The design details for this case are numerous. However, everyone comes from LICO team’s keen awareness, perception, capture, and reshaping daily life. The core of an ideal life is not fine jewelry, luxurious decoration, and stunning collection, but the feeling of love and nature of life. This original, simple, and natural sense may be the origin of a good life and happiness. The true life is not to be looked for in all places; it is here. There is no need to exaggerate the house with anything but to call back original senses. By reshaping the simple daily life and setting apart a space for breathing and dialogue, the original sense is awakened naturally in the flow of air and eye contact. True life is simple, so return life to life. The highest, the most tacit, and the most heart-warming love is the constant and natural frequency, the intimacy, the respect, the restraint, and the long-lasting kindness. To reshape daily life is to restore the ability to feel love. These are the best residences in City Garden, an ideal residence for life of simple, natural, and original sense. Arcos, a Spanish Revival Home in Brisbane

Joe Adsett Architects and Graya Construction are long-time business partners. After several years of collaborations – including the construction of Joe Adsett’s own house by Graya, the BoomerangHouse, it was time for Joe Adsett’s retribution. The Australian architect turned a typical Queenslander home in Brisbane into a Spanish Revival mansion. The house is home to Robert Gray, managing director of Graya Construction, and his wife, the psychologist Meghan Gray. QUEENSLANDER HOUSE How does a typical Queenslander house become a Spanish Revival exemplary? It seems it was a simple task to Joe Adsett Architects, with the helpful hand of Graya construction expertise. The Australian architect imagines a Mediterranean-inspired style home from the outside of the house. Arcos, the Spanish word for “arches,” is a mansion full of seductive round shapes. The curvy details are not only found in the façade and building’s structure but also in the interior design. Joe Adsett uses the ground floor of the typical Queenslander house to create immersive arched tunnels made from concrete. The dense tunnels seem to be a feature of modern architecture. Nonetheless, the curvy shapes make Arcos a contemporary interpretation of a Mediterranean house with Moorish inspiration. SPANISH REVIVAL HOME Arcos, the luxurious Spanish Revival home in Brisbane, is a property with three storeys, five bedrooms, six bathrooms, three living spaces, an eight-car garage, and a backyard patio with an outdoor lounge area. As with any other historic property, the renovation of Arcos happened under strict council guidelines. However, it didn’t prevent Joe Adsett Architects and Gray Construction from delivering to Megan and Robert Gray the home they wished for. Arcos outstands for being the perfect balance between indoors and outdoors and between industrial and natural. In the own words of Joe Adsett, “It’s a home that is designed to frame a view to the city from all rooms while connecting all living spaces to a central courtyard.” In this perfectly balanced Spanish Revival style home, concrete contrasts with grass. Furthermore, the timid beige interior contrasts with the vibrant green outdoors. In short, the luxury property is a wide luxurious home with neutral hues, welcoming and involving round shapes, and is closely connected to nature. Every room is expansive, has natural light coming in, and has a view over the outside or ends up connected to the backyard. The interior of this Spanish Revival home in Brisbane is curvy. All details in this property are round. Therefore, there is a sense of dynamism, and light floats freely inside the house. When it comes to furnishings, round shapes predominate from the kitchen countertop to the winding staircase connecting the three floors. Additionally, toilets and the bedrooms, for instance, have some mid-century modern and art-deco furniture that brings a European flair to the interior design. The bathroom in the master suite has a dramatic round bathtub that surrounds the tub. A curvy wall that holds two standing showers as well. Even though Arcos is suttle in colors, the Spanish Revival home is opulent in shapes. Due to the creativity of Joe Adsett Architects and the hands of Graya Construction, the typical Queenslander property becomes a Spanish Revival home, with inspiration from Mediterranean and Moorish architecture. Arcos is a mark not only on Australian architecture but also on modern architecture. Keep discovering Australian architecture and interior design with Hommés Studio. AD50 architect Shaun Killa Designed the Museum of the Future

The ambitious US$136 million Museum of the Future designed by Shaun Killa is destined to play a pivotal role in inspiring and nurturing imagination globally. Defining New Building Tech Museum of the Future has pushed the boundaries of design. It is one of the most complex steel and façade projects to date. The building is more than a cultural icon. Moreover, it is a great example of collaboration and sharing expertise. A regional design practice engaged with global leaders in new building materials and techniques and incorporated their pioneering technologies into the built environment. “It took just 14 months to complete the steelwork. During the construction process, they use a laser scanner to compare the positions of elements assembled with the 3D model.” A Place To Dream Each panel is unique in shape. The Arabic calligraphy is inspired by quotes from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision for the future. His beliefs on how innovation in education sectors, healthcare, smart cities, transportation, and sustainability can improve the wellbeing of people worldwide are emblazoned, larger-than-life on the steel exoskeleton. A Manifestation Of The Future The primary inspiration of the building’s unique shape was to create a form that embodies humanity and its aspirations. Therefore, the physical building embodies floors and spaces. They represent our understanding of the ‘future’ as we know it today and possibly for the next few years. In contrast, the void represents the ‘unknown,’ and people who seek the unknown innovate and discover new ideas that help guide humanity towards a better future. A Blueprint For Sustainable Design Sustainability has been the main driver for the Museum of the Future’s design since its first sketch. The aspiration was to make the design, fabrication, and operational resources as sustainable as possible. As part of this strategy, the project achieved LEED Platinum certification by using passive solar design, low-energy and low-water engineering solutions, recovery strategies for both energy and water, and building integrated renewables from an offsite solar farm. A Global Attraction The Museum of the Future is hoping to attract more than one million visitors a year. Nevertheless, it will become a showplace for a new era. A center of creativity and hope that combines elements of the exhibition, immersive theatre, and interactive attractions. Imagined as a home for tolerance, inviting varied cultural, philosophical, social, and spiritual outlooks, the Museum will be an incubator for ideas and designs, a driver for innovation, and a global destination for inventors and entrepreneurs.
