Conversation Pit: The Sunken Living Room Is Back

What goes around comes back around. Once popular in every household, the conversation pit went out of fashion. However, the Nowstalgia is in the air and the 70s interior design style is trending, so the sunken living room is making a come back. Here are 9 sunken living room ideas for a truly warm and welcoming lounge area. Created as a way to introduce a feeling of intimacy to homes, these sunken living areas push families and guests into one small and cozy space. WHAT IS A CONVERSATION PIT OR SUNKEN LIVING ROOM? A conversation pit or sunken living room is a lounge area embedded within the floor of a larger room to create intimate spaces for people to gather. Taking its origin from 1927, the architect Bruce Goff incorporated the feature in a home he designed for one of his instructors. However, the idea didn’t catch on nationally until it appeared on the set of The Dick Van Dyke Show in the early 60s, and then—seemingly overnight—the trend caught on and home builders began incorporating it on a widespread basis. Throughout the 60s and 70s, homes would have sunken living rooms. Accessed by a small set of steps, they are traditionally lined with custom built-in sofas. While creating more intimate spaces for their occupants, sunken lounges are useful tools for creating broken-plan interiors and the illusion of taller ceilings. They can also prevent furniture from obstructing outward views, forging stronger connections between homes and their surroundings. With Nowstalgia trending, many architects are enjoying the revival of sunken living rooms in modern interior design projects. However, designers are opting to fill them with free-standing furniture and statement fireplaces instead. DISCOVER 9 SUNKEN LIVNG ROOM DESIGN IDEAS. Dining Table: how to choose the right one for your home

It is at the dining table that people come together. To share a meal, to speak about their day and to make memories. So, it’s understandable why it is an important piece for your dining room. How to choose the right one? In style, shape, size, color and personality. Let’s find out. The dining table is not only a piece of furniture where to seat and eat. It is the protagonist of the dining room. Hommés Studio helps you to choose the right one for your home. A modern dining table has style and personality but there are other features to take into account. THE 3-S: SHAPE, SIZE AND STYLE When it comes to choose the right shape, the round table is the one to go for entertaining dinner parties. Apart from the easy conversation flow, it provides versatility, modernity and safety. The lack of corners assures a safety room for kids or just clumsy adults. The room becomes fluid, relaxed and lighter. For larger rooms, a rectangular table is a good choice. Big families need comfort but also amplitude, to allow more people to join in at the table. The design makes it more classic and formal, giving the room a symmetric and elegant look. With the right shape chosen, what about the size? The space defined for the dining table will determine its functionality and right style. It will be a table more practical – to eat – or more entertaining? A round table is a perfect choice when the room lacks the space. However, it may not accommodate so many people. On the other hand, the rectangular ones have to take into account the amount of chairs necessary. A SQUARE DINING TABLE OR A RECTANGULAR ONE? If in doubt between a round or a rectangular table, go for a square one. It has the best of both worlds. It can be compact and fit into small spaces but it’s also functional and symmetric. To choose the right dining table evaluate its usability. How many users it will mostly have, where will it go and what’s the style of the rest of the room. Besides its shape, size or style, the table must bring comfort and relaxation. FEELING INSPIRED? Living room decoration: trends to follow now

When it comes to living room decoration the options can be overwhelming. Colorful palettes or natural hues? Minimalist furniture or ‘more is more’? Sometimes the best solution is to follow the current trends for interior design. LIVING ROOM DECORATION: THE 4 TRENDS TO FOLLOW According to interior design specialists, these are the living room decoration trends to follow in 2022. Nature-like materials, neutral hues, round finishes and intemporal design. In conclusion, in 2022 the living room space will keep being a space of calm and stress free. The living room is probably the center room of any house. It is a space for relaxation, contemplation or even entertainment. If you’re looking to renew your living room decoration, follow these five trending rules. 1. Neutral hues and a Mediterranean vibe The earthy hues are definitely a 2022 trend. White, beige, greens and woody tones are a must have to give your living room into a Mediterranean look and feel. Besides the color palette, the textiles should also be taken into account. Besides having a statement print, this trend prefers natural textures, as wood finishes or artisanal handwork. The harmony of the room and the comfortable feeling of the home is the main goal of this trend. 2. All-natural look and the comeback of the artisan work Fabric as linen, wood, ceramic or sisal are the top choices for 2022 interior design projects. The natural look and the sustainability concern are on the top of the mind for designers. Also, décor items in translucent glass, brass, clay and teak are a must have. These looks are a feature in modern homes, where inhabitants prefer an intimate and personal design. This leads to a more selective consumption, which is preferable to have fewer objects but with more emotional value. 3. The Bold trend in your living room We already know that designers love curves and round shaped furniture. The trend known has Bold is applied to sofas, consoles, tables or décor items, turning the house into a friendly and fun space. The organic shapes turn any room into a space of serenity and tranquility. WHAT IS THE BOLD TREND? When the world changed, in 2020, we wanted our home to be cozy, warm and a place a love outside the technologies. Giving that, interior designers bet on minimal spaces with natural hues and selected materials. But the bold attitude went to the furniture and décor items. Curved sofas and rounded decoration conquered modern homes turning the spaces into a friendly and human environment. 4. Indoors-Outdoors designs The rooms are even more ambiguous. Some terraces and garden are so well designed that makes us feel like indoors. On the other hand, we want our indoors as natural as possible, so they have open floors, large windows and translucid curtains. Interior designer who worked during and after the confinement were overwhelmed with requests to turn indoors more versatile and earthy as possible. On this take, lighting is also a big concern. Easy portable furniture and lamps are on high demand, so is easier to change the space as much as you’d like. FEELING INSPIRED? World's Best Building RIBA International Prize 2021, The Friendship Hospital in Bangladesh

World’s Best New Building Is A Hospital In Bangladesh

The World’s Best New Building by RIBA International Prize 2021 is the Friendship Hospital in Bangladesh designed by local architecture studio Kashef Chowdhury/URBANA. The winner of the RIBA International Prize 2021 is the Friendship Hospital in Bangladesh. The prize is awarded biennially to a project that reveals excellent design while having a strong social impact. Designed by local architecture studio Kashef Chowdhury/URBANA for Friendship, a non-governmental organization that exists to improve the life of people living in remote rural areas. The 2021 World’s Best New Building is a low-cost and remote medical institution in southwest Bangladesh that provides healthcare services for thousands of people living in the region. The Friendship Hospital in Bangladesh is the winner of the 2021 edition because it is a celebration of a building dedicated to humans. Furthermore, it is a low-budget architecture project, integrated with its surroundings and made of local and traditional crafted materials.  ABOUT Kashef Chowdhury/URBANA Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury was born in Dhaka, the son of a civil engineer, growing up in Bangladesh and the Middle East before graduating in architecture from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1995. In 2006, he attended the Glenn Murcutt Masterclass in Sydney. Kashef Chowdhury has a studio-based practice whose works find root in history with strong emphasis on climate, materials and context – both natural and human. Projects in the studio are given extended time for research so as to reach a level of innovation and original expression. Works range from conversion of ship and low cost raised settlements in ‘chars’ to training centre, mosque, art gallery, museum, residences and multi-family housing to corporate head offices. WORLD’S BEST NEW BUILDING 2021 AWARD BY RIBA Located in Shyamnagar village in southwest Bangladesh’s Satkhira district – an area vulnerable to frequent storms and rising sea levels, the Friendship Hospital, an eighty-bed community hospital has won the RIBA International Prize 2021 by the Royal Institute of British Architects. The low-cost building was designed to work with and withstand the tangible climate change effects of rising seawater in the surrounding area. A series of courtyards bring in natural light and ventilation, while a canal traversing the site collects valuable rainwater since the groundwater remains unusable for most purposes. This channel of water adds visual relief, helps the micro-climatic cooling, and provides a welcome distraction from the anxiety and unhappiness related to illness, for both patients and their relatives. The hospital’s relationship with rainwater was a key element in the prize. Its major design feature is a canal that zigzags along the length of the hospital, splitting the outpatient building from the building for inpatient services. The cycle of catastrophic flooding in Bangladesh is caused by the combination of cyclones, monsoons, and snowmelt from the Himalayas. As climate change makes rainfall more erratic and powerful storms even more intense, millions in Bangladesh are facing devastating effects. Recognizing the mastery of 2021 World’s Best New Building is to celebrate innovation, the use of local materials and the work on limited resources. In addition, Friendship Hospital in Banglashed encouraged an architecture of care both for humanity and for nature, to rise collectively to the urgencies that we face today on a planetary scale. Surrounded by shrimp fisheries, the building is composed of a series of low-lying pavilions that are made from locally sourced brick and interspersed with courtyards. DO YOU LOVE INTERIOR DESIGN? Gwyneth Paltrow’s Home Is A Contemporary Tranquil Retreat

Gwyneth Paltrow’s home is a tranquil retreat with contemporary notes. The pad’s holistic interior design nurtures body, mind, and soul. Building Gwyneth Paltrow’s first ground-up house, a modern Spanish-style house with a courtyard in Montecito, was a long, arduous, and exciting journey. The actress assigned Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch of Roman and Williams, the AD100 firm that had previously designed the actress’s Tribeca loft, and Romanek Design Studio. Taking advantage of the heavenly geography of California, Gwyneth Paltrow’s home is powered on solar energy, with a gray-water system, reflecting Paltrow’s commitment to environmentalism as an essential consideration of the Spanish-style home building project. Furthermore, the extremely precise, thoughtful spaces, highlight wellness by design with holistic interior design making Gwyneth Paltrow’s home a tranquil retreat with contemporary notes that nurtures body, mind, and soul. Keep reading to see inside Gwyneth Paltrow’s home. ROMAN AND WILLIAMS & ROMANEK DESIGN STUDIO Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors is a New York-based design studio known for their work on hotels, restaurants, retail spaces, homes, product design and, most recently, cultural work. Founded in 2002 by principals Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, the work of Roman and Williams employs a range of ideas, materials, objects and references – from the unexpected to the pedigreed – and instilled with a heightened sense of narrative.Recently, recently, Roman and Williams has created their most personal work to date: Roman and Williams Guild NY.  Showcasing their collection of original furniture, lighting and accessories designed by the firm, as well as items collected from the workshops of the world’s best artisans, the space is home also to celebrated French chef La Mercerie, helmed by Chef Marie-Aude Rose. Romanek Design Studio was founded by Brigette Romanek, one of Los Angeles’ most sought-after Interior Designers. Being self-taught, Romanek’s tends to work on channeling her instincts into successful design solutions. Believing that spaces must be fresh, functional, aesthetically alive, that will continue to inspire for years to come, Brigitte Romanek avoids sticking to what’s trending. Her star-studded client list includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyonce, Demi Moore, and Joe Jonas, just to name a few. Brigette is proud to lead a team of dedicated designers and professionals, all of whom share her passion for design and excitement for innovation. INSIDE GWYNETH PALTROW’S HOME The revival Spanish-style home of Gywneth Paltrow in Montecito has a design scheme that deftly bridges the classical and the contemporary. With European inspiration, the home has Mediterranean-like finely crafted architectural details. High ceilings, arcs, a long, lean monolithic structure, laid out largely on one floor, with a shingled roof and stone walls that approximate the irregular rhythms and timeworn texture of dry-stack construction. Sunlight floods the space. Craft and materiality are essential in establishing the home’s soulful spirit, as well as form, flow, proportion, color, and texture. Roman and Williams paid off attention to these elements in order to create an airy yet cozy home. Gwyneth Paltrow’s modern Spanish-style home with a courtyard in Montecito is crafted to be a tranquil retreat to her family. An outdoor pool and a sybaritic home spa were designed to be relaxation spaces. The beauty and the tailoring of the areas are the result of Roman and Williams’ effort to deliver a mindful home that nurtures body, soul, and mind. With a Parisian flair, the interior decor is as much thoughtful as the architecture of Gwyneth Paltrow’s home. Even though Paltrow intended to decorate her home by herself, the actress soon realized that that were missing pieces that only a professional could bring together. Her choice was made on Brigette Romanek. Like the architecture, the decor eludes antiquated definitions of traditional and contemporary. The interior design is a tango between old and new, soft and hard, delicate and muscular, to the sound of understated colors, organic textures, and strong, simple forms. Romanek was Paltrow’s first choice not only because of their two decades of friendship but also for the first contemporary touch that Brigitte Romanek would put into Gwyneth Paltrow’s restful home. The sandy color palette is essential to optimize the natural light indoors. Nevertheless, it plays a main role in setting a soothing, peaceful, atmosphere. Brigette Romanek’s expertise is showcased in some dramatic moments that undeniably mark out the contemporary notes of Gwyneth Paltrow’s home. DO YOU LOVE INTERIOR DESIGN? A Modern Maximalist Style Renovation of an 1850s Residence

The whole renovation done by Evolve Residential, took 11 years. The process was slow but brought to the family of three, the transformation that they needed, a modern maximalist style renovation of an 1850s residence in Boston. Evolve Residential is a Boston-based firm known for organically integrating the architecture and the decoration of exquisitely designed homes that combine traditional and experimental.  Established in 2008, the award-winning team of Josh E Linder, Thomas Henry Egan III and Rebecca Abrams have been featured in Architectural Digest, New England Home, Modern Luxury Interiors, The Washington Post, Cape Cod Home, Rise, HGTV, and many others. The family requested keeping the amazing historic part of the six-story house and bringing it back to the present times. The plumbing, electric, and heating systems needed a complete update because the house hadn’t been fully updated since the 19th century. The challenge remained because it was difficult to preserve the unique original details while installing state-of-the-art systems into the structure while creating a modern maximalist style renovation of an 1850s residence. The renovation itself was divided into three phases, the process was long, but the family lived there during it all. The interior is a mix of maximalism style that balances with the interior design’s modern touches. The living room has cool tones, and the dining room, quite the opposite, has a very romantic design style. The owners enjoy moving through the rooms as the light shifts through the day. While the library becomes the space that when it gets darker, they can end a long day. Another interesting detail in this modern renovation is the floor-to-ceiling windows that enhance the residence’s majestic look. These changes create an exquisite atmosphere for the family, a modern maximalist style renovation of an 1850s residence. DO YOU LOVE INTERIOR DESIGN? Sophisticated home

A SOPHISTICATED HOME WITH A BOLD PERSONALITY AND DESIGN FLAIR

The transformation from a generic new building to a sophisticated home was designed by PlaidFox studio, giving it a bold personality and character. A SOPHISTICATED HOME WITH PERSONALITY Lead designer Ben Leavitt, co-founder of Canadian design studio PlaidFox, had a vision for a bold and jewelry home interior. The project came alive for this contemporary three-storey house in Canada which already set a dramatic scene with its panoramic views of Vancouver’s lush Stanley Park and city skyline. The owners gave Leavitt a free card to go wild. And so he went. ABOUT PLAIDFOX With a wide range of around-the-world skills and experiences — ranging from financial planning and commercial banking to interior and product design — PlaidFox are the globally inspired team you want working on your next project. The wild approach was necessary to give the new house some character and substance. “We wanted the materials to feel earth-toned and organic,” Leavitt explains. “We went with limestone because it looks like sand, and terracotta because it looks like the rocks on our beaches.” The idea was to bring more depth and textural complexity to the spaces, so some existing details were incorporated into the new design. “Beautiful custom wood floors from Germany had just been laid and I wanted to use that for a jumping off point,” says Leavitt, who decided to continue the material palette throughout the space, from the walls to the ceilings. ABOUT BEN LEAVITT As lead designer and co-founder, Ben is the mastermind behind creative concepts and designs at PlaidFox Studio. Ben graduated with an arts degree from Emily Carr University in Vancouver (his studies also included a brief stint at the Interior Design School, London). Before co-founding PlaidFox Studio, he worked for six years as the head designer of a home furnishings company, designing furniture and home decor throughout Asia. As an artist, industrial designer and avid traveller, Ben brings a unique perspective to the PlaidFox team and each of its projects. As Leavitt used to be a furniture designer, he had an eye for selecting some statement pieces. These include a life-sized leather leopard sculpture, a Versailles sofa and a satin walnut grand piano that complete the look. Thanks to the trust of its clients, Leavitt designed an eclectic yet balanced spirit of this adventurous home. DO YOU LOVE INTERIOR DESIGN? The contemporary design creates a dynamic setting with its bold pops of color. Besides the paintings, including an Andy Warhol, some mid-century pieces complement the wilderness views of this chalet. 6. Perfectly framed with the white-capped mountains, the inside is a warm and comfortable space away from the snow. 7. THE FORMER MINER’S CABIN This 1880’s former miner’s cabin was transformed into an entertaining cabin in Aspen. AN INDOOR-OUTDOOR CONCEPT The strength of the mountains is balanced with the elegance and serenity of the valleys. This Colorado ranch home is an example of the indoor-outdoor style. The modern design seeks for light in the house, blurring the separations between indoor and out. After all, the mountain view can’t be overlooked. 9. THE WOODY MONTANA RANCH This rustic Montana home overlooking the Big Hole River looks like it just belongs there. When building the house, it was took into account the landscape impact and the materials used.  Destined to welcome friends and family, the home has bold details that take advantage of the high ceiling and open windows. 10.
