Irakli Zaria – The Japanese and Mid-Century Apartment

Irakli Zaria grew up in Tbilisi, Georgia, in a cozy apartment with a modest outdoor and a gorgeous view of the city. In his house, his favorite part was the huge library with a large collection of books on architecture, art history, and, of course, Russian classics by Pushkin, Lermontov, and Tolstoy. In this article, you are going to find out the outstanding furniture and decoration that he used in this Japanese and mid-century apartment. At 17/18 he had his first contact with interior design. As interest continued to grow, he decided to go to Moscow to study at the Details Design School. Years later, he ended up opening his own interior design company. The curtains are of an embroidered Dedar silk, the wallpaper is by Holland & Sherry, the 1925 ceramic bowl is by Edouard Cazaux, and the Venetian glass decanters are from the 1960s. Most of his projects are residential and most of his clients are in Moscow, where he now resides. Also designed several international projects, including an 1880s apartment in Barcelona and a 1950s villa in Cannes, France. This duplex apartment in London is owned by a Russian couple with 3 young children and they often travel to London. He is a businessman, and she is a well-known fashion blogger. It is a modern building overlooking Hyde Park, surrounded by neoclassical houses. The couple wanted a nice, relaxed place that didn’t look too “London-ish”. Irakli Zaria soon realized that he had to incorporate a little color into the spaces to contrast London’s characteristic gray weather. The woman shared the designer’s passion for furniture from the 1950s to the 1970s, so 80% of the furniture is vintage. For Irakli Zaria, carpets are the biggest painting in a living room, the designer started with this very important piece in any room. The patterns are inspired by ancient Japanese Art Deco. Source: ELLE Decor In the sitting room, the three armchairs are from the 1960s, the cocktail tables and custom screens are by Galerie Glustin, and the 1970s Pino Signoretto vase is Venetian. The silk rug and gilt mirror are both custom, and the drypoint print on the mantel is by Oleg Kudryashov. After choosing carpets, the color palette is another important point to take into account. For this apartment, Irakli Zaria chose a palette composed of shades of turquoise. Source: ELLE Decor The daughter’s custom bed is covered in a bedspread made from a Pierre Frey silk. The Milo Baughman bench, Italian glass-and-brass cabinet, and Murano lamp are all from the 1970s, the silk carpet and plaster-relief clouds are custom, and the 1950s chandelier is by Carlo Scarpa. Designer Irakli Zaria is known for always incorporating Japanese and Chinese art and antiques into his projects. In this project, there are two Japanese screens. One of them is hung above the headboard in the master bedroom from the 17th century and gives the room a vibrant and cozy feel. In the master bedroom, the custom headboard is in a Holland & Sherry velvet, the nightstand is from the 1970s, and the 1935 leather lamp is by Paul Dupré-Lafon. The screen is 17th-century Japanese, and the metallic raffia wallcovering is by Phillip Jeffries. Japan’s other gold screen is in the dining room. It is a 16th-century piece with 15th-century Chinese love letter inserts. The paint hangs in the dining room, offsetting the vintage raffia chairs Milo Baughman, and a Karl Springer table that looks like marble but is actually leather goat covered with many layers of lacquer. Art House – A Striking Modern House by Nina Maya Interiors

Sydney-based interior design studio Nina Maya Interiors in collaboration with Bevan Boss Architects transforms a postmodern Mediterranean-inspired mansion into a luxurious modern house. Called “Art House Residence”, this house is a giant that offered unlimited possibilities for the designers, but because it lacked the artistic touch, it did not speak to its current owners. Perhaps because of Nina Maya’s roots in fashion design, the house presents a refined loft aesthetic, inspired by the American architect Anne Decker. Nina Maya is known for her tailored, polished spaces and precise, considered approach. “Purity of materials, unexpected elements and custom designed details are the hallmarks of our style” says the designer. Nina is passionate about art and curated, layered spaces. Her projects are full of sophistication and luxury, which are presented in minimalist and harmonious way. The residence is, not without reason, listed in the Australian Interior Design Awards 2020. Despite the huge spaces, including a steam bath, a 20-meter crescent-shaped swimming pool or an underground gym, the interiors are not overwhelming. Instead, the space feels fresh and eclectic, full of carefully chosen art pieces and furniture to complete the striking aesthetic of this modern house. Nina Maya decided to keep the white color palette that is typical for postmodern Mediterranean-style. The original framework was used as a base, but the plan of the house was changed. The designer managed to create a great flow between the interiors with the use of sinuous curves. Because of oval silhuettes and curvy forms, this modern house features gentle divisions between space, while avoiding the implementation of full open plan living. This impressive Australian mansion welcomes guests with a dramatic entryway complete with a black double door. Maya decided on marble stairs, both inside and outside. In the entryway a spotless white curvy staircase sits in a two-story void, inviting visitors to enter this harmonious artistic house. There, the guests can admire the vintage Tomasso Barbi Gold palm floor lamp, which brings aesthetical balance to the hallway. „Interesting fluid furniture forms with the final touch of colour were brought in through carefully curated key art. Pieces, commissioned and site specific, to give the project a complete bespoke feel” says Nina. She knitted different styles together, mixing a collection of modern art and unique antiques with European furniture, creating glamorous and artsy interiors. Each room provides an explosion of textures, colours and styles, from aged brass, natural timbers, raw marble to plush fabrics and high shine lacquered finishes which create a comfortable and relaxing environment. From its neutral base palette of soft grey and cool whites, layers of textiles and natural stones and handmade elements add richness and a sense of luxury. Round shapes and the choice of materials give the feeling of permeation of space. This flow i salso featured in the choice of limestone floor from Montenegro, that continues throughout this modern house. „The grey limestone that runs throughout indor and outdoor areas creates a seamless flow and a neutral palette on which to layer furnishings and art on top of” – says the designer. Art House Residence is true to its name, with Ninas’ eclectic and unique choice of furniture and art pieces. Playful and eye-catching, they yet don’t seem to steal the show, working as a perfect background for the colorful furniture pieces instead. Everything has been hand designed and made with custom finishes to provide the harmonious, artistic and sophisticated atmosphere that mirrors the owners and designers passion for art.

charles zana memphis design style apartment

Memphis style in a classic French apartment by Charles Zana

Hidden in an 18th century mansion, Charles Zana’s private apartment is full of Memphis-style art and furniture, especially those of the Memphis movement founder – Ettore Sottsass. Zana, the great admirer of the Italian architect, collected his works for 15 years. Thanks to the combination of the designer’s passion and French interior design style, he created that looks as if the interiors and furniture had nothing in common. However, this unusual mixture creates a wonderful, highly eclectic and unusual whole. Charles Zana is known for combining different epochs and styles in his projects and is not afraid of bold combinations. In Memphis style, Zana is mostly impressed by the scope and complexity, particularly evident in the works of Sottsass. The designer claims that the architect was one of the leading figures of the 20th century, whose genius was never fully appreciated. “He changed everything,” says Zana in an interview for the New York Times, “He was really the first person to live completely in this most interesting place between art and architecture. Zanas’ collection consists of over 30 Sottsass’ works, including rare prototype ceramics, furniture and lighting – some of which were from Sottsass’ pre-Memphis period. The core of the collection consists of three ceramic-glazed totems the size of a human being, which have been exposed in key areas of the house. Sottsass created them in 1965 after recovering from nephritis. He made 21 of these totems which give life to his hospital sketches of pills and medicines stacked high like building blocks. Poza dziełami prekursora stylu Memphis, w mieszkaniu Zany znaleźć można także prace Andrei Branzi, założyciela Archizoomu. ‘‘I am not just interested in the objects,’’ he says. ‘‘I am interested in the ideas, which were a lot more classical than people give them credit for.’’ Według projektanta, spośród wszystkich projektantów związanych z włoską awangardą, Sottsass and Branzi byli jednymi z niewielu naprawdę wielkich myślicieli. Apart from the works of the precursor of the Memphis style, Zanas’ apartment also contains works by Andrea Branzi, founder of Archizoom. „I am not just interested in the objects,” he says; „I am interested in the ideas, which were a lot more classical than people give them credit for”. According to the designer, of all the designers associated with the Italian avant-garde, Sottsass and Branzi were one of the few really great thinkers. The classic interiors of a Parisian flat are decorated with eclectic furniture and works of art, and this combination gives the place an amazing atmosphere. Mint walls with beautiful French ornaments provide a wonderful background for the colourful, bold objects that the designer has collected over the years. Zana sees himself to be a ‘‘bohemian sort of collector,” he refuses to treat his home like a museum or art gallery: ‘‘I always thought it was absurd to treat things as though they were suddenly so delicate and valuable when that wasn’t how they started. I would rather be alive with beauty than living in a museum, with things under glass”.

Vintage aesthetic in a London apartment by Nebihe Cihan

Turkish-American interior designer Nebihe Cihan is adept at merging fine art and interior design. She has a true talent for balancing contrasts. Her mixtures of classic architecture, modern textures and edgy art that can be seen in several of her projects in New York, Los Angeles and London, brought her new attention from the design world. Check out one of Cihans’ latest projects – an extravagant Kuwaits’ family apartment in London: Before founding her design studio in 2016, Nebihe concentrated on high end retail design, working for Catherine Malandrino in New York, followed by Michael Kors, where she worked for many years, as a senior designer for the Store Design and Development department globally. Because of her Middle-Eastern background and extensive travels, there is a cultural symbiosis present throughout her work, that can be also seen in the London project. She draws inspiration from different cultures and epoques, successfully navigating between classical arts and modern patterns. The simplicity and luxury, that are core features of her works, can be seen throughout the choice of colors in the Hyde Parks apartment. Beiges, whites and greys are accompanied with bold color accents, such as browns, yellows and purples, that resemble the Middle East. This London project, called Queen’s Gate, is a pied-a-terre that a Kuwait family entrusted her to refresh 30 years after they last renovated it. Nebihes’ main goal was to find a great balance between Victorian architecture and Parisian influences, with the addition of some of the Middle Eastern motifs. “I envisioned a cosy-yet-chic feel to the interiors, incorporating vintage elements with new.” Says Cihan. The main hall of the apartment features beautiful brown wall ornaments that are accompanied by elegant and colorful furniture and accessories of the family’s heritage. And we can’t help to sigh at the beautiful marble console table. If you feel like it’s something you just simply need to have, check out the Quantic Console by Hommes. Nebihe is passionate about curating art collections of her clients as well as seamlessly integrating their existing art work, in way that both reflects their character and sets the mood. Working with high profile, private clients, Nebihe’s refined eye brings to life their brief, with a clean aesthetic, that can only be defined as Nebihe Cihan. We need to admit, that this classy and very luxurious apartment provides a perfect harmonious feeling that is present in all of Nebihe Cihans’ works. We hope you liked this new lookbook article. 5 World Art Museums to visit during social distancing times

The world is living unprecedented times. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the streets are deserted, and people are confined to their homes for the sake of public health. Because of this situation, many museums, galleries, and even zoos are making an effort to move online and are offering free virtual tours.  Google Arts & Culture has always been a great platform and they are using it to remind us once again that they have a lot of entertainment to offer. Now, your favorite museums are just some clicks away providing high quality images, detailed information and videos. Here are five art museums that took their collections online: Musée d’Orsay – Paris The history of the museum, of its building, is quite unusual. In the center of Paris on the banks of the Seine, opposite the Tuileries Gardens, the museum was installed in the former Orsay railway station, built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900. So the building itself could be seen as the first “work of art” in the Musee d’Orsay, which displays collections of art from the period 1848 to 1914. 2. Van Gogh Museum – Amsterdam The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam had to integrate our list of art museums to visit during quarentine. It houses the largest collection of artworks by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) in the world. The permanent collection includes over 200 paintings by Vincent van Gogh, 500 drawings and more than 750 letters. The museum also presents exhibitions on various subjects from 19th-century art history. 3. MoMA The Museum of Modern Art – New York Founded in 1929, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in midtown Manhattan was the first museum devoted to the modern era. Today MoMA’s rich and varied collection offers a panoramic overview of modern and contemporary art, from the innovative European painting and sculpture of the 1880s to today’s film, design, and performance art. From an initial gift of eight prints and one drawing, the collection has grown to include over 150 000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects. Collection highlights include Claude Monet’s Water Lilies, Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night, and Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, along with more recent works by Andy Warhol, Elizabeth Murray, Cindy Sherman, and many others. 4. Uffizi Gallery – Florence The Uffizi was designed by Giorgio Vasari in 1560 for Cosimo I de’Medici to house the Granducal Magistratures of Tuscany. Over time, the top floor loggia became an exhibition of the dynastic collection of ancient sculpture, artwork and artifacts. As you can see there are a lot of world art museums to visit during quarentine, and this number will rise as they start to open their doors in the digital world. 5. Guggenheim Bilbao – Bilbao The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao’s mission is to collect, preserve, and research into modern and contemporary works of art and to present them in their historical context, offering audiences of every age and type a chance to discover the art of our time. The Museum’s art program, which includes presentations from the permanent collection and special exhibitions, is presented in the building designed by Frank Gehry, an extraordinary architectural landmark on a par with the art treasures it houses. Since it first opened to the public on October 19, 1997, the Guggenheim Bilbao has been part of the international constellation of Guggenheim Museums, renowned for its iconic buildings and innovative approach to museum model that allows members to share resources, projects, and initiatives. Artsy Ksenia Chilingarovas’ Moscow Apartment by Crosby Studios

Russian fashion designer Ksenia Chilingarova was introduced to well-known Moscow- and New York-based architect Harry Nuriev of Crosby Studios by a mutual friend. “We had an immediate connection based on similar tastes in art, design, fashion and architecture. She was open to my design approach” says Nuriev. As soon as they met, they clicked right away. “I guess it was love at first sight” – states Chilingarova. No wonder that their collaboration resulted in an amazing, full of art and Russian accents project, already admired by the design world and commented in Architectural Digest Magazine. The goal was to turn Chilingarovas’ apartment into a place full of life and art, as she has an impressive collection of artworks by Evgeny Antufiev, Nikolay Koshelev, Sasha Pasternak, and Vika Kosheleva. The designer is a very hospitable person, often hosting small parties and gatherings of artists and creative visitors. She didn’t want an apartment that would look like a museum, but rather a warm, welcoming space that would feel comfortable yet sophisticated. “It is important for me that the persons who come to visit me understand who I am and what I like. I love contemporary Russian art and I invest in it to support artists” says Chilingarova. “I needed a place to live, not a museum,” she says. “A place I could have small parties for young Russian artists, stylists, and journalists. Almost every two weeks a young stylist or photographer wants to do a fashion or art shoot in my apartment.” Because of the mutual love of the same colors and shared Soviet upbringing, Nuriev and Chilingarova managed to create truly unique space. In Soviet Russia they both were always frowned upon, as they weren’t following school rules and were into eccentric clothes and activities. Nuriev decided to combine modern, bold colors and patterns with retrofuturistic Russian aesthetic that corresponded with both of their personal styles; “For me, Soviet design is all about elegant office life with wooden wall paneling and lots of cabinets”. That’s were all those hidden cabinets and a big wardrobe come from. The designer wanted to take the best out of the Russian heritage, but make it bold and elegant at the same time. As a result, he created rooms with windowed, wood-paneled walls and laid the floors with herringbone parquet, so that it would resemble the ones from Russian schools. Additionally, he decided to hang lace curtains on the windows, as Russian grandmothers used to have in their houses. All the pieces of furniture were custom-made. “I really love the furniture that came out as a result of our discussions with Harry about combining traditional Russian folklore and street art” Chilingarova comments. An armchair, dining chairs, and gigantic dining table were carved from oak. The apartment also features some of the Nurievs’ own products, such as powder-coated shelving and hand lamps in the living room. “My home is my fortress and a place where my soul feels good” – states Chilingarova. And we need to admit, that her place really gives a very relaxing and comfortable vibe.

How To Choose Art For A Living Room? 10 Bold Ideas

How to choose art for living room? And how to blend artwork and furniture? These are 10 bold ideas for a spotless living room layout. PARIS APARTMENT, CATHY VEDOVI AND BENOIT DUPUIS In this historic apartment in Paris, originally designed by Jansen, Cathy Vedovi and the architect Benoit Dupuis renovated the house to host and highlight three big Takashi Murakami panels. The living room is big enough to have two distinctive areas – one is an angular nook with dark hues and red blocks of color (including an abstract art piece). The other one is an airy an neutral conversational area with a large wall art that creates a whimsical landscape in a room that lacks outdoor views. The distinctive areas become one with a doughnut-shaped artwork by Nathalie Djurberg right in the middle of the tow distinctive sites. MADRID APARTMENT, JAIME BERIESTEIN At Jamie Beriestein’s own apartment in Madrid, the designer achieves a spotless neutral living room with minimal layout. Two iconic Le Corbusier armchairs surround a vibrant Table Bleue by Yves Klein among an all-white living room. On the wall, a blue-klein artwork by Peter Helly is a mirror to the square center table. MANHATTAN PENTHOUSE, 2MICHAELS In this penthouse in Manhattan designed by Joan and Jayne Michaels, the sister behind 2Michaels, one of the living rooms combines curvy furniture with an abstract artwork. For instance, the sculpture on the wall of the living room is a work of New York-based artist Charles Hinman. The interior designers heavenly matched the mustard yellow round sofa with the wall art. BAY AREA HOME, GEOFFREY DE SOUSA Geoffrey de Sousa takes a Tudor-style home and reinterpretates the timeless English interior design. For a modern living room, the San Francisco-based designer keeps the traditional chocolate walnut floor and the classic paneled walls which is the backdrop for a surrealist painting. This surrealist painting is the focal point of the living room whose dark tint pigments contrast with the pastel upholstery. RESIDENCE IN TORONTO, KATHERINE NEWMAN DESIGN The art for a living room in this residence in Toronto is the perfect blend of artwork and topnotch furniture design. It’s hard to tell which one came first to the mind of Katherine Newman Design, the creative behind this gallery-look-alike family room. NEW YORK RESIDENCE, SUZANNE LOVELL This residence in New York keeps the French Beaux-Arts architecture after Suzanne Lovell’s intervention. Being the home of a true art collector, choosing the art for a living room with high-end furniture and grayscale. To add eccentricity and modernity, Suzanne Lovell curated a vibrant pop art artwork. NEW YORK MAXIMALIST HOME, KEVIN ISBELL Designed by Kevin Isbell, this maximalist home is bold, and magnificently out of the box, made for a Kuwaiti family. The owners of this maximalist home in New York City wanted something eclectic and personal. Something to go out of their comfort zone by not having a monotone, minimalist space. This living room alternates between the color blue and the color green with barocque patterns and prints. Even though the art for the living room is abstract and contemporary, the paintings both on the living room and dining room blend in with the upholstery. PSYCHEDELIC HOME IN KEIZERSGRACHT, JOB SMEETS Every furniture piece is a work of art in this unworldly home in the Netherlands. Designing for friends, Job Smeets brought to life a psychadelic home that ressembles a theme park. PARIS APARTMENT, JEAN-LOUIS DENIOT The customer of the French decorator honestly admited that he loves art, but wasn’t ready to invest a lot of money in it. Yet, the owner of the apartment in Paris wanted a chilled and artistic ambiance. As a result, Jean-Louis Deniot created the geometric art for the living room of the maximalist interior. MOSCOW APARTMENT, AKANT The choice of art for a living room in a modern Moscow apartment was a 1942 tapestry by Lucien Couteau. A traditional artwork for a bold interior design. New York Designers: Living Room

New York Designers:Welcome To A Stunning Manhattan Residence

New York designers Timothy Haynes and Kevin Roberts introduce us to an impressive penthouse with panoramic views of the Hudson River. New York designers Timothy Haynes and Kevin Roberts were happily ensconced in their expansive loft in a classic SoHo cast-iron building for several years. The duo behind the interior firm Haynes-Roberts had arrayed the home with works from their extensive art collection and a sophisticated mix of antique and vintage furnishings. Everything about the place exuded a stylish, downtown vibe. “We never thought we’d leave,” says Haynes. Then, about a decade ago, while commuting to their firm’s Chelsea studio, New York designers Timothy Haynes and Kevin Roberts found themselves captivated by a striking addition to the city’s skyline—a curvy, 15-story apartment tower rising on the edge of the West Village, overlooking the Hudson River. The building, 160 Leroy, was the brainchild of developer Ian Schrager and conceived by Herzog & de Meuron, adding to the roster of architectural landmarks devised by design superstars along the city’s Far West Side. For the acclaimed duo, this bold architectural statement marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter in their lives and design journey. For years, New York designers Timothy Haynes and Kevin Roberts lived comfortably in their expansive SoHo loft, a perfect backdrop for their art collection and carefully curated mix of vintage and antique furnishings. As the founders of the acclaimed interior firm Haynes-Roberts, their home reflected their sophisticated style and connection to the city’s downtown vibe. Leaving this cherished space seemed unthinkable—until fate and architecture intervened. Their journey to a new home began about a decade ago when they noticed 160 Leroy, a curvaceous apartment tower designed by Herzog & de Meuron, rising on the edge of the West Village. Initially hesitant, Roberts was persuaded by Haynes to visit a penthouse unit. The soaring 13-foot ceilings, tranquil entry courtyard by Madison Cox, and panoramic Hudson River views quickly won them over. By late 2019, the New York designers sold their beloved SoHo loft and embarked on a bold new chapter. The penthouse offered great potential but required a complete overhaul to suit the couple’s lifestyle. Configured initially with five bedrooms and numerous interior walls, the space felt too compartmentalized. Initially planning only minor updates, New York designers Timothy Haynes and Kevin Roberts soon embraced a full-scale renovation, working with contractors to reimagine the layout. They removed unnecessary walls, allowing the breathtaking Hudson views to take center stage, and created a seamless flow that celebrated their art and design collection. In the centerpiece River Room, an Axel Vervoordt sofa in Loro Piana linen is paired with striking vintage pieces, including Paul Evans armchairs and a Pierre Cardin cocktail table. Above, a Glenn Ligon neon sculpture provides a poetic glow, while Markus Lüpertz’s commanding canvas anchors the room. The adjacent living room continues the art-forward narrative, showcasing works by Georg Baselitz and Bridget Riley alongside a Gabriella Crespi brass cocktail table and sculptural vintage lounge chairs. Timothy Haynes and Kevin Roberts exemplify the transformative power of vision and creativity, solidifying their status as leading New York designers. Their journey from a historic SoHo loft to a meticulously reimagined West Village penthouse showcases their mastery in blending art, architecture, and lifestyle. By prioritizing negative space and natural light, they created a home that is both timeless and contemporary, a perfect canvas for their curated collection of design and art. The penthouse’s open layout and sweeping Hudson River views are a testament to its ability to honor both environment and aesthetics. For these acclaimed New York designers, the move was not just about a new address but a reinvention—an opportunity to evolve while staying true to their design philosophy. Every day, as they walk along the Hudson, they are reminded of the beauty of transformation, a hallmark of their celebrated careers in the world of design. At HOMMÉS Studio, we share this philosophy, offering a curated selection of unique furniture, lighting, and decor that transforms any space into an extraordinary experience. Explore our collections to discover the textures, shapes, and statement pieces that can bring a touch of Wicked movie-inspired magic into your home or project.
