In this colorful apartment, the photographer, writer, and editor Tamu McPherson add a vivid zing of uplifting color and the shapely silhouettes of statement furniture to energize a historic Milan apartment. Tamu McPherson’s journey from Kingston, Jamaica, to the heart of Milan goes to show that you cannot always pin your destination in advance. After leaving the Caribbean as a child for the artistic enclave of Nyack, New York, she eventually moved to the Big Apple to study at Fordham Law, where she fell for an Italian student. Known for his transportive hospitality spaces worldwide, designer extraordinaire Martin Brudnizki has revealed a new social club in Los Angeles that goes beyond time and place. Opening April 2, The Britely features a sexy restaurant and bar inside, plus a tropical rooftop lounge equipped with poolside seating and sweeping views of the city skyline. “The client said they wanted something ‘hyper glamorous,” Martin Brudnizki says. “For me to be able to design something as abstract as that, I needed to find and build a narrative: What is hyper-glamorous in West Hollywood? Of course, it was Hollywood itself, the film industry, and those incredibly evocative images that came through during the late 1940s and ’50s.” To give the indoor restaurant a cinematic quality, Brudnizki sheathed the rooms in a high-gloss lacquer and gilded the ceilings with mirrored accents. They picked the pink walls because the reflection of that color will make everyone look 2o years younger. “I love color, but what I think about when I paint a room a certain hue is what it will do with light through the day, afternoon, evening, and night because it is essential always to feel comfortable, warm, and welcoming.” By swathing the space in reflective materials, the London-based designer gave the room sparkle and shine, bouncing the light from the custom fixtures around the space. The main bar, crafted to conjure the illusion of a starlet’s vanity mirror, is surrounded by marquee-like bulbs with two cascading chandeliers bookending the dramatic marble-top counter that’s surmounted by a curvilinear ceiling fixture. Sig Bergamin, architect and decorator, a favorite of Brazilian high society, is celebrated for interiors that combine color, pattern, and origin in joyful, sometimes unexpected, and always chic. His mantra, after all, is “mix, mix, mix.” The designer brings a flexible design to an avid art collector’s breezy modernist hideaway near São Paolo’s beach. For Bergamin, an acquisitive collector, art is essential to his signature approach. The homes he shares with his partner, architect Murilo Lomas, in São Paulo, New York, Paris, and Miami are filled with collections ranging from midcentury Scandinavian ceramics to contemporary sculptures and paintings. The couple has a particular affinity for contemporary Brazilian artists, including Vik Muniz and Beatriz Milhazes. Friends whose works grace Bergamin’s residences and those that he and Lomas create for the prominent bankers, industrialists, fashion editors, and socialites who make up their roster. “Murilo and I are always exploring and looking for art,” says Bergamin, who often recommends artists and gallerists to his clients. That was not necessary in the case of a São Paulo banking executive and avid collector who tasked Bergamin with decorating his beachfront retreat near Guarujá. A popular weekend getaway for well-heeled Paulistanos about a 90-minute drive from the city. The client already owned an extensive collection of 20th-century and contemporary art, much of it Brazilian. “The artworks had to be the protagonists of the interior,” Bergamin says, “a composition fusing architecture, decoration, and art in a spectacular beachfront setting.” The modernist house, designed for a previous owner by noted São Paulo architect Marcio Kogan of Studio MK27, overlooks Iporanga Beach. At the heart of the house are an open living-dining room framed by lush hillsides at one end and sweeping vistas of the ocean and distant mountains. When the long glass walls on both sides is slid entirely open, the space becomes a breezy beachside terrace. While Bergamin typically looks to boldly patterned wallpapers, fabrics, and rugs to animate his luxurious interiors, in this house he allows the tropical greenery and the cerulean surf to play that role. On the pale stone wall surrounding the main living area’s fireplace, a quartet of prismatic works by Argentine-born Op Art and Kinetic artist Julio Le Parc joins a sprawling, colorful abstraction by Luiz Áquila and a baroquely patterned canvas by Mariana Palma, both contemporary Brazilian painters. The primary bedroom showcases six of Muniz’s archival inkjet prints, based on Henri Matisse’s cutouts and a graphic canvas by Alfredo Volpi. One of Brazil’s most important 20th-century painters, featuring his iconic abstract festival flags motif. An interior designer and a furniture dealer, also life partners, have joined powers to create a loft apartment, and the result is extraordinary. In this floor plan apartment, located in a former Tribeca building in New York City, Ryan Lawson, and Sean Robins (director of Studio Van den Akker) faced a significant challenge: the lack of natural light. “Although it is a large open space, it has limited light with windows only in the front and back,” says Lawson. However, sometimes limitations are the starting point for great ideas. At night, the collection of modernist furniture and art comes to life differently thanks to the intelligent lighting system. This allows the brightness and color of each lamp in the loft apartment to be monitored separately from a digital device. “Sean is a technology fiend, so I never know what is coming next,” Lawson confesses. The temperature of all the lights can be warmed and cozy in the way of incandescent light, no matter what type of fixture. Choosing objects, furniture, and artwork, which would stand out during the day and at night, was not easy. Both work in the design world. There is much visual information they receive every day – historical references, interiors, art galleries, books, auctions. “Throughout the day, we see things.
