Inside The EVE Hotel: A Masterclass in Hospitality Design

Furniture, Rugs, and the Art of Designed Comfort

In the heart of Redfern’s Wunderlich Lane, Sydney’s newest boutique destination—the EVE Hotel by SJB Architects—is rewriting the language of hospitality design. Drawing deeply from Australia’s rich landscape, cultural fabric, and artisanal sensibilities, the project is more than a hotel; it’s a curated sensory experience that exemplifies the evolution of style and place-making in modern Australian architecture.

Every design element in the EVE Hotel—whether it be color, material, or spatial rhythm—has been carefully chosen to evoke warmth, individuality, and a connection to the land.

Color as Identity in Hospitality Design

One of the EVE Hotel’s most striking achievements is its color palette. Far from corporate beige or trendy monochromes, the hotel embraces hues derived directly from the Australian environment. Interior tones include eucalyptus green, red earth ochre, and smoky neutrals—all echoing the native flora, arid soil, and coastal cliffs of Australia.

Each guest room has its own subtly distinct palette, reinforcing the notion of individualized space—a cornerstone of thoughtful hospitality design. The rich clay terracotta in Bar Julius’s vaulted ceiling contrasts beautifully with the cool blues of patterned glass, while the rooftop’s vivid accents—cabanas in deep red and palm green—introduce layers of vibrancy and seasonal dynamism.

Texture, Materiality & Layered Comfort

Texture plays a key role in the emotional depth of the EVE Hotel. SJB’s design approach elevates hospitality design beyond aesthetics, using materiality to provoke mood and comfort. The tactile richness is immediately felt underfoot, with stone flooring in the lobby and glazed tiling lining the walls. Natural fibers and raw edges provide a sensorial counterbalance to sleek brass accents and marble in the bathrooms.

In guestrooms, textured rugs anchor the space—some custom-designed by local artisans—offering softness and a sense of personal luxury. Upholstered bedheads, woven throws, and leather lounge chairs all reflect a commitment to both comfort and visual appeal. These are not superficial choices; they are calculated expressions of Australian hospitality design values—authentic, grounded, and layered.

Architectural Lightness and Spatial Flow

Natural light is one of the most potent tools in hospitality design, and the EVE Hotel uses it masterfully. The central courtyard acts as a lung, bringing in filtered sunlight through native greenery and into internal corridors, rooms, and lounges. Arched windows and floor-to-ceiling glass doors allow light to move and reflect differently throughout the day, creating organic variation in the atmosphere.

This biophilic approach—a hallmark of high-end hospitality design—grounds guests in a sense of time and place. Soft shadows, leafy silhouettes, and sun-dappled walls replace artificial environments with seasonal authenticity. The light isn’t simply illuminating the design—it’s part of the design.

Furniture That Tells a Story

At the EVE Hotel, furniture is not merely functional—it’s narrative-driven. Every chair, table, and light fixture has been selected or custom-designed to add a layer of storytelling to the guest experience. Many of the featured pieces are by celebrated Australian designer Louise Olsen, who brings a distinctly local flavor to their craftsmanship.

Whether it’s a sculptural coffee table, brass lobby lamps, or an arched timber bed frame, each item speaks of the human hand. SJB’s design team integrates these elements to support the broader hospitality design mission: to create spaces that feel intimate, thoughtful, and unmistakably Australian.

Bar Julius, the hotel’s signature ground-floor venue, exemplifies this ethos. With its plush burgundy banquettes, hand-painted ceiling, and oversized mirrors, it combines old-world charm with modern restraint. The furnishings invite lingering—morning espresso, afternoon aperitif, or late-night wine—all stages in the rhythm of a stay shaped by intelligent hospitality design.

Craftsmanship and Individuality

What distinguishes the EVE Hotel from other luxury accommodations is its unapologetic embrace of individuality and craftsmanship. Mass production has no place here. From hand-laid tiles to custom rugs and bespoke art pieces to stone-carved basin sinks, each gesture contributes to a rich tapestry of experience.

This commitment is particularly evident in the bathroom design. Curved shower walls, marble details, and brushed metal fixtures echo a modernist sensibility softened by handcrafted finesse. The result is a space that feels both high-design and personal—a rare combination in commercial hospitality design.

Even the corridors, often overlooked in hospitality projects, are carefully curated: arched thresholds, recessed lighting, and tactile wall finishes evoke the feeling of a cloistered retreat. These transitions between public and private areas are treated with the same level of detail as the suites themselves, ensuring that every part of the hotel experience is intentional.

Rugs, Art & the Language of Detail

Rugs throughout the hotel play a crucial role in reinforcing character and zoning space. Beyond their comfort and acoustic value, the rugs offer bursts of color and subtle texture changes that define room functions. Many pieces are either vintage or designed by Australian weavers, featuring abstract patterns that echo natural forms—such as rivers, dunes, and leaves—further grounding the experience in place.

The artwork throughout the hotel is just as carefully curated. Paintings, ceramics, and wall sculptures tell stories of the country, identity, and texture. These pieces are not mere decoration—they collaborate in a layered narrative of hospitality that guests intuitively feel, even if they don’t immediately analyze it.

Hospitality Design as Cultural Expression

The EVE Hotel is not just a triumph of boutique accommodation—it is a blueprint for the future of Australian hospitality design. Through its intelligent use of color, texture, and light, its commitment to individuality and craft, and its integration of storytelling through furniture, rugs, and art, the hotel offers an experience that is both immersive and grounded.

It is not luxury for luxury’s sake. It is designed with soul, architecture with memory, and service with intimacy. In an era of algorithmic travel and aesthetic uniformity, the EVE Hotel demonstrates that genuine hospitality design remains capable of surprising, delighting, and connecting us to our surroundings.
