Celebrating Italian Design: Shop The Look

It’s been way too long since the last time we had the chance to experience the epitome of classical elegance and modern creativity. Milan Design Week 2021 is here. And with it, we are celebrating modern Italian design with as much stylishness and sophistication as required. Italian design is the world trendsetter in fashion, architecture, industrial, and interior design. It assembles high-end details, elegance, and sophistication. And it is the link between the past and the future. The strong heritage of Italian design blurs the line between art and interiors. CLASSIC ELEGANCE AND MODERN CREATIVITY Midcentury modern Italian design combines classic elegance with modern creativity. In the Cluedo seating collection, Máni Center Table, and Lush Mirror, art deco and Memphis Milano bounce in our perception. On one hand, a playful design captivates our attention with squishy shapes. On the other hand, a conventional color palette highlights the distinctive elegance of each one of these modern furniture pieces. ASTOUNDING CRAFTSMANSHIP Expertise is the best way of celebrating Italian design. Stainless steel, polished marble spheres, wood marquetry, and gloss finishings underline the astounding craftsmanship that comes from designing and manufacturing with passion, detail, and know-how.  The Quantic console table is a mixture of travertine stone, golden stainless steel, and hand-polished. The Rumba console table honors wood marquetry. Finally, the Marino sideboard has a multitude of tactile (and visual) textures with marble and stainless steel and wood both raw and lacquered. All these features are mastered by love. The artistry enlivens a room and, at the same time, starts off some interesting conversations about the design and its heritage. SELECTED MATERIALS Celebrating Italian design is celebrating high-end materials, carefully sourced and crafted. Glass, wood, marble, ceramics, natural fibers, and sustainable materials. Italian design combines stylishness and innovation. The Ibiza mirror is made of lacquered wood and natural fibers. Jaxon rug is made of natural fibers as well, namely wood. And so does Ahron rug which is made of sustainable fibers made from bamboo. Hommés Studio delivers products that are as stylish as innovative. When it comes to textiles, products are made of wool and silk – classic premium materials. Nevertheless, incubating the future, our textiles are mostly recycled fibers and vegan fibers made from bamboo and wood. SCULPTURAL FURNITURE DESIGN Sculptural chandeliers, streamlined furniture, and visual textures are features that modern Italian design got us used to. Celebrating Italian design is to celebrate distinctive elegance and idiosyncratic features. Fuschia is an elegant dining table with is the juxtaposition of rectangular and round shapes. The zingy (and stunning) Mystic suspension lamp is the epitome of modern Italian design while the Luminous suspension lamp is a streamlined and modern interpretation of art deco lighting fixtures. Join us in this celebration of elegance, sophistication, and utmost quality. Carden Cunietti transform a 19th-century house into a genuine jewel box

Cunietti, born in New York, had a major residential project in Ireland and recruited the Glasgow-born Carden to help her. After the project, which went very well, the designers decided to join forces and created CARDEN CUNIETTI in 1996. Also, launched in 1996, the store gained a loyal following for its eclectic range of accessories. However, after 11 years, the way the designers combined old and new had been stolen by many other stores, and they decided to leave from retail. The duo Audrey Carden and Eleanora Cunietti transform a 19th-century house into a real jewel box, introducing stunning decorations. Audrey Carden and Eleanora Cunietti met through their boyfriends who, at the time, played in the same band. At the time, both were interior decorators. For the designers, renovating a London home was a much less extraordinary task. Their clients had decided to move from a five-story house to a smaller house in Westminster. The house is light and welcoming on the outside. However, inside the house, all the period details had been removed by the previous owners. The designers had one goal: to bring the house to life. Not just with a simple restoration, but by adding enough stunning elements to make it something like a jewelry box. Entrance Carden admits that her customers are people who like to entertain, so the entrance to the house is not just an entrance. Instead, it is a space of celebration, of welcome. The designers planned the floor in black and white marble, matching the ceiling’s plaster panel. If you barely notice the ceiling, blame it on the giant green glass chandelier. However, the most dramatic features of the room, which the clients already had from the old house, are the large glass panels by Cypriot artist Yorgos Papadopoulos. Living Room The living room is close to the garden, so it has a relatively tranquil vibe and always feels light, even on a gray London day. The unusually high wood of the baseboard contrasts with the white plaster of the wall. The fireplace is travertine and brass and adds much elegance to the space, along with the two blue armchairs. His office Carden, for this project, wanted to do a red lacquer ceiling, and so he did, in his office. The matching painting, depicting a figure reclining on a red floor, is by William Kentridge. The custom sofa, covered in velvet, turns a corner, allowing those sitting on it to watch the television. Her office It is a reasonably long room with a lot of solid surfaces. The goal in this space was to soundproof it a bit, and they achieved that. They upholstered the tops of the walls in light blue linen. The sofa belongs to the owners’ old house but recovered in a red fabric. Dining room The designers thickened the walls to allow the house’s bronze and flat glass doors to open proportionally. This way, it is possible to have large spaces without anything interrupting the passage. The dining table is by British furniture manufacturer Davidson. Kitchen The client loves to cook, so the kitchen needed to be practical and functional, and sociable. In this way, it was possible to create a breakfast nook to have a place for people to sit and hang out. Master Bedroom Everything in the bedroom is pretty neutral, to give a sense of calm and relaxation. Murano lighting and other vintage pieces give the space a soft and romantic feel. Master bathroom At the clients’ request, the designers designed a hotel bathroom. Thus, they decided to use black and white marble to achieve a luxurious hotel feel. The makeup table and mirror are custom made. The fabric of the stools is from C&C Milano, and the light fixtures are antiques. Daughter’s Bedroom The task was to make a space that was comfortable for studying but also a bit glamorous. The sliding mirror on the desk works well for makeup and hair and hides the more practical things stored on the shelves. Daughter’s bathroom The client’s daughters are beautiful women, so the goal was a fun bathroom where they could get ready for their nights on the town. She achieved this by combining Art Deco motifs with colors and marble. The house took about four months to design and 14 months to build. Throughout the spaces, there is a lot of detail work. Federation-era home in Melbourne receives a romantic Art Deco Design

This art deco design Federation house in Melbourne’s south-east, altered and added to by Kennedy Nolan, served up one such interesting savant: a former clinical psychologist, now a corporate and philanthropic chair who, for the sake of anonymity and the romantic tint of her vision, we shall refer to as Rosie. Enveloped by Charlotte Perriand’s no-frills furnishings and academic titles that tell of her learning, she imparts the narrative of ‘the handball’ — the passing of the property from her daughter. The latter, buying the house then settling on a more significant place in the same street, set about ‘massaging’ her mother into an “easy” transfer of titles. Project architect Patrick Kennedy, who is in attendance to advise on continuing works, chuckles at the recall and revises ‘massaging’ into full-blown manipulation. The joint laughter lets you know all scheming was mutually agreeable as Rosie enters. A formal living space to the left of an entrance hall that Kennedy cured of its dark colonial introspection with a peachy warmth and a hand-knotted and hand-knitted rug by Faye Toogood. Those qualities congeal extravagantly in the ‘fantasy room,’ where panels of Phillip Jeffries’ ‘Serenity’ silk wallpaper drop streamers of feathery willow branch down to a watery-green idyll of enveloping Womb chair by Eero Saarinen, Chester Moon sofa by Paola Navone, and a ripple-effect Noor rug from Loom. The detail seemingly conjures the Samurai folktale Green Willow and conspires to elicit calm and comment from Rosie about the importance of headroom and the need for design to nourish holistically. While self-knowledge and stability may not be the most talked-up design attributes, Rosie makes a profound observation about positive place-making, which is about liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it. Good designers define those likes and let the inner landscape of dreams, mysteries, and memories materialize in the details, as per Rosie’s dining room — a space that improvises the bygone drama of New York City’s Waldorf Astoria hotel. “I love its atmosphere, and I love Art Deco design,” she says, “I wanted some of that here, but was a bit confused between art Deco design and Nouveau.” Proving her pass of its final test, Rosie identifies the early 20th-century stained-glass features and ornate fretwork in the room as Nouveau. Additionally, she nods to the wiry shape of the Nigel Coates-designed Thonet chairs flanking the room’s fireplace as speaking carefully of the lyricality of Nouveau. She admits that the gilt-edged art from her former home may conflict with the Deco vibe but considers it an essential tribute to where she has come from. Reached by two routes that collude to keep mystery and narrative alive, the two-level rear of the property rewards with the sun-filled spectacle of more private living and dining space styled with a nostalgic longing for the travertine-lined glamour of Rosie’s parental 1980s home. She talks about comfort, both mental and physical states, claiming it to be as much a function of memory as it is of luxurious seating, and points to the music memorial. It anchors an otherwise floating lightness of furnishings that look to an aromatic cedar-shingled wall on one side and a “fantasy wonderland wilderness” on the other. This bush idyll courses with a small river and flanks with bird and bee-luring natives. Its sanctum is found branching off a dark corridor that tunnels with more than a hint of Freudian intent to a bathroom swathed in light, Deco detail, and views over rooftops. Kennedy Nolan’s tight management of denial and release, contraction and expansion, light and dark in a labyrinthine plan made analogous to life, is both a salve and source of inspiration for Rosie. Victoria House, The New Modern Office Interior by Hutchinson & Partners

A London-based architectural studio, Hutchinson & Partners, recently added another modern refurbishment to the portfolio. The Victoria House clearly has become the new modern office interior. The renovation of the Victoria House was pretty extensive. The neoclassical property contains 27,000 sq meters of office space. On the exterior, the building is simple in form. What is more, it is also characterized by grandeur of scale. On the other hand, the modern office interior of the Victoria House is kept in a minimalist and very pure style. Along with the heavy exterior, it creates an impressive modern workplace. The studio wanted to update the historic marble-lined space. The goal was to present the new modern and minimal design. The Victoria House was covered in a new more contemporary layer. Victoria House Modern Office Interior On the ground floor we can find not only a marble and a travertine entrance hall but also a terrazzo staircase. The studio renewed the space in order to provide the pleasant modern office interior. Every interior of the Victoria House is decorated in calm, earth tones. The upper levels reveal a flexible office interior. The workspaces are suitable both for formal and informal meetings. Upstairs we can find the kitchens, libraries and lounges. The wide and spacious interiors of the Victoria House leave a lot of room to show off as it comes to the interior design. The Alsop Suite and The Long Suite provide spaces for the office tenants to meet with clients. Additionaly, the Heritage Suite contains a gym, multi-use studio alongside a lecture room, boardroom and meeting room suite. In every modern interior the team has used unique but simple furniture. We can find light-beige couches along with marble-glazed tables. In the Victoria House office interior there is a plenty of golden details and accessories. Moreover, every detail of a design in the Victoria House is amazingly precise and fits the office interior in the best way. Striking and Timeless Black and White Interior Design

Black and White interior design is striking and timeless. Black and White represents the negative and the positive, the evil and the good. Just like Yin and Yang, black and white means balance and brings harmony to any interior design project. Some argue that black and white interior design is the absence of color. Others say it is the strongest color combination possible in interior design. This monochromatic palette is simultaneously conventional and revolutionary. It is classic and contemporary as well. A black and white interior design project will dare you to be bold. To add touches of gold, vibrant pops of color, and designer furniture. Black and White Interiors also allow you to mix – and not necessarily match – patterns like no other color palette. Black and White interior design is everything or nothing at all. Be brave, design fiercely, let your creativity flow. BLACK, WHITE AND OAK As imagined by her client, Nicole Hollis turns this home on East Coast into a modern wonder. The black and white dining room has an oak sideboard with its natural pigmentation. A black and white art piece hangs on the immaculate white wall. The oak dining table with black paint slowly fades into the grey flooring. BLACK AND WHITE TERRAZZO Inside an old industrial building, Jessica Schuster Design creates a spacious loft in New York City. One of the bathrooms has Renata black and white terrazzo tiles on the floor and walls. This black and white bathroom has brass faucets to add a classic flair. WHITE WALLS, EVERYTHING ELSE BLACK In an apartment next to Regent’s Park in London, Olga Ashby designs an all-black kitchen – black marble countertop, black bar stool, and black cabinetry. This stunning and elegant kitchen was only possible due to the high and white ceiling. BLACK AND WHITE NEO-ART DECO ELEGANCE Oscar Lucien Ono from Maison Numéro 20 revives the art deco style with this neo art deco apartment in Paris. The hallway has a classic black and white marble floor and white walls adorned with black furniture and home accessories with some glimpses of brass. BLACK INTERIORS WITH GLIMPSES OF WHITE On the new home of Nickelodeon’s president and his wife, Brian Robbins and Tracy James, the couple and interior design duo Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent create a mansion full of neutral colors. The bar and lounge area for the family is full black. Berkus and Brent add white lampshades, a white side table, and white stool covers, as well as some white ceramics. BLACK AND WHITE STRIPES FLOORING Fern Santini decorates a 16-million property with music as a theme. Besides a unique collection of vinyl, books, and photographs, this A-List house has a black and white bathroom with black and white stripes on the floor. WHITE HUES WITH GLIMPSES OF BLACK A New York penthouse comes to our eyes in white hues with subtle elements in black. The interior design project of Lee Broom takes white as the main color. However, touches of black are present in every room. BLACK AND WHITE WALLPAPER In Sydney, the top Australian interior designer Blainey North proposes an entryway with black and white wallpaper. The project named Allala is a Mediterranean-style interior design project. BLACK AND WHITE AND GREY Psychadelic meets zen at Miley Cyrus’ home in LA. The property was decorated by Miley Cyrus’ mother, Tish Cyrus, and Mat Sanders. The bathroom has a black and white bathtub and other black and white features. This bathroom has the perfect balance between black, white and grey. BLACK AND WHITE NURSERY Jessica Alba has a black and white nursery at her property in LA. The interior design is by Clements Design. A black and white nursery is a great idea for a gender-neutral nursery. BLACK AND WHITE AND GOLD Nothing is more timeless than the combination of black, white, and gold. In The Hamptons, Tamara Magel designs an eco-friendly home. The bathroom is minimal yet unforgettable. How would you create your own black and white interior design? Nicole Hollis Converts a Home Into a Modern Wonder

San Francisco designer Nicole Hollis is well-known for rigorously spare interiors, favoring neutral palettes of blacks, whites, and grays. However, her rooms never feel unambiguous, thanks to a skill with distinguishing materials and textures matched by her keen eye for high-impact contemporary art and unique furnishings. Nicole Hollis’s boldly sophisticated style has made her a favorite among clients, including one who recently returned to Sausalito after living for years on the East Coast. His passions continue to social entrepreneurship, art, and the outdoors. He wanted a home overlooking the bay to entertain friends and spend time with his grown daughters. He found a house, but its Mediterranean styling was not precisely what he had in mind. So he turned to Nicole Hollis, who collaborated with the San Francisco firm John Lum Architecture, to give the place a glossy, modern makeover. The goal was to pair a feeling of serenity with the spectacular view. They wanted to simplify but with suitable materials – taking it down and then bringing it back up. Structural changes included moving the stairs to create a vital, more central architectural element. In addition, the team removed some first-floor walls to open up a spacious living and dining area, where Hollis installed limestone flooring and finished the walls in warm white plaster. One of the living area walls is a minimalist white marble fireplace and floating hearth that Hollis describes as the room’s star. That space’s confident mix of furnishings is anchored by a curvaceous sofa and a pair of midcentury Italian lounge chairs. Holly Baxter & Associates recommended the art acquisitions, including the Pae White “Smoke” tapestry that overlooks the dining area. Hollis designed the fumed-oak table, keeping in mind her client’s desire for it to serve double duty as a spot for poker games and meals. She also conceived the rift-cut, white oak cabinet with textured panels to accommodate a pop-up TV. The kitchen is outfitted with oak floors and low cabinets so as not to interrupt the view. Murano glass and silvered brass wall lamps break up the room’s orthogonal solid, while walnut stools with angular backs by Hollis tuck under the island’s counter.    In the client’s office, a Viktorie Langer painting in bold reds and blues stands out amid the room’s predominantly dusky color scheme. The office’s bronze and leather desk are surrounded by matching hand-carved chairs by Rooms and stands on a Christopher Farr carpet in dark charcoal silk. In the entryway, at the foot of the open staircase, Richard Artschwager’s sculpture Exclamation Point injects a playful pop of enthusiasm. The stairs lead to a second-floor landing with a rectangular skylight. Adding to the play of light are a Jim Lambie wall installation of colored sunglasses and a geometric hanging sculpture with tinted acrylic panels.  The serene primary bedroom features a custom-designed bed and otherworldly sculpted-plaster pendants by Rogan Gregory on the second floor. The bath is just as calm, with oak cabinets, travertine countertops, flanking the custom mirror framed in blackened steel, and a pair of minimalist lights by Michael Anastassiades. Nicole  Hollis says that her client was deeply engaged while “trusting our vision, which made the project so enjoyable and collaborative.” However, she notes that the art of creating restrained interiors is far from simple or easy.
