A Fusion of Art Deco Restaurant Design and Chinese Decor

Indulge in the breathtaking ambiance of Songyun Villa, the perfect fusion of an art deco restaurant and traditional Chinese decor. Welcome to Songyun Villa, an exquisite restaurant in Changzhou (China) that combines traditional and modern elements to create an unforgettable dining experience. The restaurant’s interior design (the result of an extensive renovation by the interdisciplinary design practice, Bob Chen Design Office) is a fusion of Chinese decor and art deco restaurant design, featuring multiple small and large dining rooms spread over three levels, with each one exploring this common theme in a different way. In this article, we will delve into the details of Songyun Villa’s interior design, highlighting its unique features and the ambiance it creates for diners. Arriving at Songyun Villa When first arriving at Sognyun Villa, one can be immediately amazed by the villa’s imposing brick gate, decorated with detailed stone carvings in true Chinese tradition and embellished with subtle details in the form of golden accents and purposeful lighting that recalls us to the art deco style, warning us about the place we’re about to enter. If one dares to do so, they’re immediately greeted by a lush courtyard showcasing original decorative features. The villa’s outdoor area boasts a sleek fish pond with steel and wood borders, complementing the existing marble reliefs, stone pedestals, and mosaic tiling. This patio also features a bar housed in a modern metal building painted black, designed to balance with the villa’s original brickwork, setting the tone for the restaurant’s interior design. Entering Songyun Villa The tiny vestibules and halls that are encountered when visitors approach the home serve as a prelude to the restaurant’s unusual layout. The segmented arrangement of the house was maintained by the Bob Chen Design Office, which also added a bigger dining hall in the former ballroom, with the restaurant now featuring fifteen dining rooms of varying sizes distributed over three levels (but all of which exploring this beautiful balance between Chinese decor and the art deco style). This variety of eating spaces enables everything from private dining and small parties to bigger ceremonies. With each room having a distinctive décor, the designers have let their imaginations run wild, embracing a style that is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese decor and that is presented through a contemporary perspective leaning heavily on an art deco restaurant design approach. In this sense, the designers behind this project took inspiration from traditional Chinese art forms (and Chinese decor) such as landscape paintings, porcelain decorations, and calligraphy, integrating a variety of designs that range from floral motifs to geometric patterns and figurative art into the wallpapers, screens, tiling, and artworks. Furthermore, other traditional Chinese decor pieces are also placed throughout the restaurant, like antique vases, ceremonial tea sets, incense burners, and bonsai plants. To counterbalance everything, the designers implement contemporary design staples like clean lines, simple shapes, and a somber color palette of saturated dark hues and grey tones, leaning heavily into the art deco restaurant approach with detailed furniture and light fixtures with gold accents and opulent vintage designs. But it is this mix of natural textures like rough stone and wood with clean and sophisticated ones like glossy metallics, polished marble, and velvet, that creates this spatial and visual experience that is both sticking and balanced. When Art Deco Restaurant Design Meets Chinese Decor The design of Songyun Villa is a true masterpiece, with a unique and eclectic mix of Chinese and Western architectural and design elements, making it a harmonious blend of the old and the new. The villa’s interiors are an homage to Chinese decor, and the design approach of this art deco restaurant has successfully created an indulgent spatial and visual experience that complements the culinary experience. Dining at Songyun Villa is not just about the food but also about the experience, from the moment guests enter the villa’s courtyard to the intimate dining spaces, which have been designed to evoke a sense of Chinese heritage rendered through a modern lens (thanks to the mix of Chinese decor and the art deco style). The Bob Chen Design Office has truly achieved a balance between past and present, tradition and modernity, and East and West. Are you feeling inspired by this project? Art Deco Style in a Haussmann Architecture

Art Deco Style in a Haussmann Architecture: A Parisians’ dream apartment

Mix all the glamour of a Haussmann Architecture with an Art Deco style decor: this apartment, by Pierre Lacroix, is pure luxury in the French capital! Check it out: If there is one thing the French pride themselves on, it is their good taste in arts and history. When it comes to interior design, it couldn’t be any different. Known for their quality construction, high ceilings, spacious rooms, and boiseries on the walls, apartments with Haussmann architecture are increasingly valued. Architect and designer Pierre Lacroix, was commissioned to renovate the interior of this century-old 230 square meter apartment next to Parc Monceau in Paris. The space, transformed by time, was originally intended for a politician in the 1930s, who set up his office there.   Check out more details about the renovation of this 3.80 meter high area, which was completely renovated in Art Deco style for a couple and their two children. Haussmann Architecture: Art and history in One Place This style of architecture revives modern 19th century Paris, which underwent a major urban renewal between the years 1853 and 1870 – with legacies that endure to this day. Apartments designed in Haussmann architecture epitomize the meaning of luxury and sophistication: crystal chandeliers, dramatic curtains, and a hint of ornate walls. The construction matches perfectly with all the glamour present in the Art Deco style decoration, characterized by rich colors, bold geometry, and decadent detail work. PIERRE LACROIX’S PROJECT To revive the former glory of this apartment that had not been renovated in sixty years, Pierre Lacroix devoted himself to “perfecting all the historical elements” already present. The walnut double doors in the living room, the trumeau in the dining room, the fireplaces, mirrors, woodwork and frescoes are witnesses to a rich past, which have been carefully restored.  Decorating a place in the art deco style requires, in addition to refinement, the choice of materials that further highlight the aesthetics of the strong and bold look that the style proposes. To further enhance this setting, Lacroix opted for natural materials such as stone, wood and marble, applying subtle shades and patinas.  In the dining room, for example, a large vintage pendant light fixture hangs beneath a stunning oak table. The sideboard is made of lacquered metal and suede, while a set of mirror and sconces luxuriously adorn the marble fireplace. In order to make the space even more functional, Pierre Lacroix redesigned the floor plan of the entire apartment. To do this, he added a new perspective of the park with a wooden table, TV rooms, living and master bedroom, as well as creating movable breakthroughs and doors to bring more light into the room. The architect and renowned interior designer also rearranged the rooms to create comfortable spaces, using furniture designed by him and imposing hangings from an old 1930s movie theater to light up the living room and dining room.  TIMELESS LINES AND VINTAGE TEXTURES Art deco inspired upholstery fabrics mainly include velvets and leathers. Solid colors or fabrics with geometric designs of upholstered furniture are also considered true classics in this decorating style!  In the kitchen, the highlight is the floor paved in beige stone and black marble, contrasting with the woodiness of the built-in furniture. The details for metallic pieces complement the environment with grace. To further transform the art deco style aesthetic, the predominant palette of whites and beiges was complemented with touches of warm colors – such as red, orange, and ochre – to accentuate the cozy atmosphere of the living area.  In the bedroom, the original frescoes, present in another room of the apartment, were restored and repositioned around the bed. Lacroix favored the woodwork and the classic elements of the very minimalist, monochromatic room (with a special touch for the pedestal lights on the sides of the bed and the travertine bedside table). Get inspired by the Art Deco Style Aesthetics: Inspired by this stunning Haussmann architecture apartment designed by interior design Pierre Lacroix, we’ve separated some pieces to help you complete your Art Deco Style decor, which contains their own unique narrative articulated in the smallest details and boldness, just like this place. Art Deco Apartment in NYC, Michael Imperioli

Inside the Art Deco Apartment of The White Lotus actor, Michael Imperioli

The Art Deco Apartment in New York City was designed by his wife and interior designer, Victoria, and reflects everything the style calls for: art and glamour. Lights, camera… Action! Unlike the annoying tone of his most recent character in The White Lotus, Dominic Di Grasso, actor Michael Imperioli welcomed AD magazine to his art deco apartment with much enthusiasm. Check it all out in this post! Filled with artistic, musical and literary references, the star shows the two-bedroom accommodation in New York city  and quickly transports us into a world of complete passion. Take a look at the details of Michael Imperiolis’ Art Deco apartment: The “Behind-The-Scenes” Interior designer Married for 27 years and with grown children, the couple makes the most of the space where they live: an old hotel with classic flair and completely redesigned by the hands of Victoria Imperioli, his wife, interior designer and set designer. “I don’t need to tell her anything, she knows what I need,” says the actor about the fact that his wife has perfectly matched his extensive collection of artistic items in the space. The century-old apartment, which in the actor’s words is “a refuge from the world,” could easily be considered a gem from New York’s glorious Jazz Age, as it carries many references to the style in Art Deco. The past of the building, built in 1926, served as inspiration for Victoria, who designed the space as if it were “a beautiful hotel suite,” since spaces such as the living room was designed in shades of gray to highlight the works of art and the kitchen displays gorgeous arrangements in black and white marble. The Art Deco Apartment Inspiration: Geometric forms, angular lines, color patterns, curves, and a lot of glam are the primary distinguishing qualities of the Art Deco style in terms of furniture, aesthetics and design. This the art movement, which first appeared in Europe in the 1920s, also makes use of cubism, modernism, and neoclassicism as design cues. And it was with this audacious and at the same time sensual proposal that the interior designer designed the decoration of their own Art Deco apartment. The couple, who travel a lot, makes a point of always bringing works of art and antiques from wherever they visit. Among paintings and true relics, we can highlight the Testa di Moro, a ceramic piece acquired while Michael was filming the second season of The White Lotus in Taormina, Sicily. Among the acquisitions, the wallpaper used in the composition of the space was also saved until the best occasion. “If I see something exceptional, I will buy a lot of it. More kind of classically themed things, they’re sometimes a little bit hard to find.” says Victoria. With many elements in gold – a classic color that enhances the luxuriousness of the style -, textures in velvet and the use of metals in the detailing of the furniture, walking through this Art Deco apartment rooms is like getting lost in a 1920s Hollywood movie. In the main rooms we can highlight the living room, which invites us to admire a large German painting from the 19th century, and in the dining room, next to the beautiful French table and chairs, an unsigned oil painting of Santa Barbara. The kitchen, though small, was also almost completely remodeled when the Imperiolis moved in. Simple but functional, the cabinets that house the couple’s dishes were completely remade by the professional, who kept the birch wallpapers from Ukraine (her origins) until the opportunity to use them arrived. The choice of colors for the rooms was also carefully thought out. In Michael’s office, for example, where the actor spends much of his time between work and reading, it is possible to be immersed in a world of blues and greys, colors that stimulate intellectual activity. It is also where the star is dedicated to music and where he proudly displays part of his instrument collection, since he is also a member of the band “Zopa”, which released its first album in 2021. Colors are also a reference in the couple’s bedroom. With many details in yellow, the idea was that the symbolism of the sun – sometimes rare in the gray days of New York – would be comforting and create a warmer atmosphere upon waking up. Michael and Victoria, who have been practicing Buddhism for years, also have a special room for meditation practices. The so-called “Buddha Room” is a former closet that is now decorated in traditional yellow and red and houses religious “thangkas” paintings that Victoria brought back from a trip to Nepal in 2017. Finally, there is also the bathroom, the last part of the beautiful art deco apartment. With a “bélle epoque” vibe, the gold and metallic matches very well with the light tones of the tiles on the walls and the marble of the countertop with mirror. Once again, the interior designer good taste left the space elegant, useful and and irresistible, characteristics that best define the proposal of an art deco apartment.  Wow, what a wonderful tour through the art deco apartment of the star of The White Lotus series, Michael Imperioli. A palm tree-shaped floor lamp complements the room with a panel of leather-wrapped sliding doors with marble, quartzite and brass inlays that open to a television. Since the majority of furniture and fixtures fitted in the foyer is art deco style, the entryway has a lush look but a warm and welcoming feel. Using two rugs, one under the pedestal table and another on the wall, as an art piece, the design studio balances extravagant finishes from the custom suspension lamp and modern stools. Despite being ultra-glamorous, the layout of this modern art deco entryway encompasses essential items to create an entryway that makes a great first impression in any interior design style. The room’s richness of details is extraordinary. The custom modern art deco wallpaper behind the bed’s headboard mimics the marquetry pattern of the two nightstands siding the luxurious bed. These nightstands reveal a curated choice from HOMMÉS Studio’s interior design team. To respect the room’s walls with round edges, the design studio picked out from the brand’s catalog a round nightstand that respects the room’s streamlined structure and gives a calming sense of motion. The main bedroom also makes the most out of a sophisticated rug by TAPIS Studio. In this room, this stunning piece is paired with other statement furniture designs by HOMMÉS Studio. The custom wallpaper behind the headboard is the backdrop for a modern bedroom with art deco, mid-century modern, and Memphis Design style furniture. The plethora of textures and shapes give the luxurious bedroom a whimsical atmosphere, as seen with the irregular Matrioska Nightstands matching the iconic Matrioska Chest Of Drawers. Designed to spend long hours in, this bedroom evokes quietness and healthfulness and has a cozy nook for reflection and relaxation. Dining Room and Living Room With an open plan that shelters the kitchen, dining room, and living room, this HOMMÉS Studio’s interior design project uses a color gradient to delimitate these three areas. Even though HOMMÉS Studio’s interior design team didn’t intervene in the kitchen, the design studio includes this ultra-minimalist area in a cluster of delightful natural pigments that gets more intense and warmer as we walk towards the living room, where elegant and passionate hues culminate. Starting from the all-white kitchen, the dining room is a swirl of cream, beige, taupe, and brown, leading to the living room, where sandy hues are combined with blush and scarlet pigments. Similarly to the entryway, the modern art deco dining area of this open plan designed by HOMMÉS Studio reinterprets timeless interior design styles. In the dining area, the long oval dining table with a marquetry table top and two contrasting legs is a sophisticated approach to Memphis Design style furniture. The elegant dining chairs obey the crips proportions of mid-century modern furniture, and the marvelous suspension lamp in hammered brass emanates a whimsical glow over the tablescape. With impeccable construction and a neutral color palette, HOMMÉS Studio’s interior design team creates an eating area that brings the luxe fine dining experience to any home. Reaching the living room, pristine whites, sandy beiges, and peachy pinks set a romantic atmosphere, perfect for a serene napping session, an evening reading a book or engaging conversations with loved ones. When decorating with art deco style, the streamlined silhouettes and opulent colors can be overwhelming. Aware of it, Bloom combines vintage art deco furniture with modern furniture and unique objects treasured at flea markets. Many objects inside the walls of Alisa Bloom’s art deco apartment in Chicago are Paris’ findings. The designer often spends time in Europe pursuing inspiration and objects. For instance, in this art deco interior design project, Bloom installed a vintage fireplace found in Paris, where she spends the most time. In each room of this art deco interior, the jewelry and interior designer pulled off a laid-back luxury. In the kitchen, Alisa Bloom went for a custom cabinet that celebrates all the glamour and extravagance of the 30s.
