On today’s Hotel Designs series we have a very special project to present you. The 18th-century industrial revolution and the shift towards mass production changed the approach to craftsmanship, pushing it down. To bring the craft back into play, many artists began to promote ceramics, textiles and furniture making. A great example of the weave of traditional Mexican craftsmanship and modernity was presented by AG Studio in the beautiful Casa Hoyos Hotel project.
Casa Hoyos is located in a former Spanish manor house in San Miguel De Allende, Mexico, a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site. The surroundings of this historic town are filled with many colourful Baroque style buildings dating back to the mid 17th century. The building has belonged to the Hoyos family for four generations.
Designers tried to highlight the colonial features of the building as well as its Mexican character. It is visible in the colour palette and the use of traditional Mexican ceramic tiles and mirror pots. The building’s facade, which is one piece of concrete, resembles Mexican modernism.
The central point of the building is a courtyard with concrete walls and arches lined with black and peach tiles. The colour palette used for the project refers to the symbol of the Hoyos family. The interior layout is concentric; all rooms and spaces of the hotel are arranged around an indoor patio. At the back of the first level, there is a mural and the altar of Lady of Sorrows from Loreto – made and hand-painted in a glazed Talavera from the town of Dolores Hidalgo. It is a reference to the Spanish religious traditions of the Hoyos family.
The colour palette is dominated by yellow, which is visible in glazed clay tiles symbolizing a corncob. The colour of the sun is also used inside the building, it is the main colour of the spacious rooms. For a contrast, designers used strong elements of red and black. The colour mixture is also present inside the hotel, where red and cream furniture fabrics in the lounge area are accompanied by yellow tiles on the walls and strong black elements.
Casa consists of 16 suites in shades of yellow, black, red and pink. A large part of the hotel floors are lined with black furniture. Studio AG tried to use as many items found in the Hoyos family house as possible. The result is an intriguing combination of traditional and contemporary Mexican furniture and goods, such as armchairs, antique stools and ornamental plant pots. The furniture used in the project combines elements of colonial Baroque with Mexican and Spanish culture.
The frosting on the cake is a beautiful hotel terrace, from which visitors can admire the alluring sunsets every day. There is also a bar and a swimming pool surrounded by bright red loungers and woven chairs from which you can enjoy the views.
