Find out how the designer Charu Ghandi used contemporary minimalist decor to bring a true breath of fresh air to this Dubai Penthouse.

In the luxurious yet relaxing Palmeira Jumeirah island, a challenge arose for the interior designer Charu Ghandi, which consisted of completely transforming a “raw shell” of a property into something welcoming, relaxing, and cozy, ready for his client’s family to settle in.

Ghandi wanted to make this enormous penthouse in the sky feel soothing, so he took inspiration from the land and the sea, which resulted in his choice for minimalist decor, which resulted in the overall neutral color palette, paired with the practical, minimalist choice for furniture and decor.

It’s clear that making the penthouse luxurious, without sacrificing its comfort and livability, so Ghandi made sure to mix these qualities into the furniture, which he made sure matched the minimalist decor in terms of elegance and aesthetic.

In order to do this in the living room, Ghandi decided to use minimalist sofas, chairs, and rugs, which made use of simple shapes and patterns, such as the ones we can see here in this section of the living room.

The pieces were made by local craftspeople and artisans, which resulted in this room’s aesthetic being aligned with what Ghandi had envisioned, with the brilliant combinations of round and sharper shapes, gold and grey colors, keeping the overall ambiance chic, yet inviting.

However, the client also wanted this high-class penthouse to be kid-friendly, and also include more formal entertainment spaces, so Ghandi had to get a bit more creative.

Still regarding the living room, Ghandi chose to use low, circular tables, with little to no decor on top of them, which is a very common technique in minimalist decor used to optimize functionality that he used on most pieces of furniture and decor in this room.

The rug has a very subtle yet soothing pattern that blends beautifully with the room’s colors and shapes, making it a staple piece of the entire room’s aesthetic and theme.

On the other hand, the piano also brings about a sense of sophistication and a classical touch to the otherwise simple attributes that are predominant in this living room, thanks to the usage of minimalist decor.

Dubai’s skyline and seaside were an integral part of the interior design and color palette, so much so that Ghandi said: “We felt the interiors had to stand up against the amazing views without fighting them.”

Another good example of Ghandi’s usage of minimalist decor is this downward spiral staircase, which leads to the lower floor in an elegant fashion, accompanied by the staircase’s smooth shape and transition into the smooth beige floor panels.

The Moroccan Hammam steam room is something that was also implemented to further make this a more relaxing and enjoyable home, paired with these beautiful turquoise walls and domed niches inlaid with emerald mother of pearl and abalone shells, that once again bring about a sense of luxury among the minimalist decor.

The outside room for the Moroccan Hammam steam room keeps the Arabic aesthetic present, as well as a fantastic view of the city of Dubai, which also goes for the gym room, which allows for an active and complete workout while gazing upon Dubai’s Skyline.

The neutral colors that are key for Ghandi’s minimalist decor strategy are still very much present in these rooms, namely with the presence of white and grey colors.

When it comes to the children’s bedroom and the main suite, Ghandi chose to keep the minimalist decor, of course but chose to make a few adjustments to match the rooms to their respective users.

The main suite is a very elegant room, with hand-painted silk wallpaper, cool-blue marble on top of the bedside tables, and of course a neutral color palette all around the room, which makes this yet another great usage of minimalist decor techniques by Ghandi.

The children’s bedroom, on the other hand, has a floral motif developed in collaboration with Fahmeed Khalique, and it features bespoke, crafted leather flowers; one of the creations is even hanging from the ceiling of the daughter’s room.

“There is something poetic about Dubai apartments with soaring views. We wanted to create a sanctuary where every detail carried a sense of storytelling linked to the location and this incredible bird’s eye perspective over the city and coastline.”

In this project, Ghandi used minimalist decor to its full potential, turning this penthouse into a true extension of the beautiful Dubai skyline.
