The mind-blowing ME hotel by Melia, Dubai

Opened on Sunday, March 1, 2020 – the mind-blowing ME hotel by Melia in Dubai was an event that the architecture world was waiting for long.

Located in the remarkable Opus by Omniyat building in Downtown Dubai is a true pearl in the Burj Khalifa district.

The long-awaited project was designed by award-winning Zaha Hadid. It embraces all the best of her works features: unobvious curves, sharp angles, daring colours and luminous spaces.

This luxurious building now also plays a role of a tribute to the designer. The first fully designed hotel by Zaha turns out to be her last one, as the designer unexpectedly died in 2016 at the age of 65. After her death, Zaha Hadid Architects goal was to finalize the project in Zaha’s spirit.

Mahdi Amjad, the Executive Chairman and CEO, explained; “the design conveys the remarkable inventive quality of Zaha Hadid Architects’ work. It expresses sculptural sensibility that reinvents the balance between solid and void, opaque and transparent, interior and exterior.”

The unique shape of the building, designed as two separate towers that coalesce into a singular whole, was designed in a way, that no two bathrooms are alike. The hotel consists of 93 rooms and 19 suites, as well as common spaces and restaurants. All the furniture in the suites and common areas was personally selected by Hadid.

Each of the 93 rooms is designed in either golden desert or midnight blue theme. From the windows, guests can expect the view over the Dubai Canal and Burj Khalifa tower.

Two towers of The Opus would form a cube if it weren’t for the huge hollow gap in the centre of the building. Because of its patchy shape, all the glass parts needed to be individually made.

Beneath the gap, there is a four-storey ground level of the building, which connects the two towers.

Above the eight-storey hollow we get to admire the spectacular uneven “sky bridge” that connects four floors.

Due to its ubiquitous glass, the building shines either during the day, when it reflects the glaring sun, and at night, with all of the lights around.

This wonderful hallmark of Dubai’s architecture, spanning on the area of 2,000,000 square feet, also welcomes visitors with its marble swimming pool, gym and spa areas.

When it comes to dining, ME by Melia serves its guest 15 different dining options, with 3 luxury restaurants, including Central, designed by Paul Bishop. Visitors from all over the world don’t need to worry as the restaurants are diverse and all cuisines-friendly. There are also plans for two-storey underground nightclub.
