This modern Mediterranean house is made of chalky white concrete and plastered with rendered plaster—the warm earth tones and rich texture of the interior complement the simple exterior. The clients of this incredible modern Mediterranean house were super involved in the interior design. They collected artwork, sourced furniture, and commissioned unique textiles. Al Sayed created a stunning layout based on his travels to Morocco. All these spaces are separated and positioned between the masses so clients can circulate through the lovely courtyard, where we found an incredible old olive tree at the center of the house. Also, the art pieces are stunning, such as the sculpture by Anish Kapoor that hangs above a chair designed by Jonas Bohlin in 1980. At the heart of the design, the main bedroom suite and offices anchor one corner of the residence, providing a private and tranquil retreat for the homeowners, the children’s bedrooms in the second corner. The kitchen and garage occupy the third, ensuring convenience and functionality for daily living. Another notable feature of the house is the inclusion of a library, bar, and an older child’s bedroom, thoughtfully positioned in the fourth. The strategic arrangement of the different areas creates a cohesive and free-flowing space throughout. The living room, in particular, showcases an extraordinary earthy color palette that harmonizes seamlessly with the home’s exterior. Wearstler and her team sourced exquisite vintage pieces from Europe to add a touch of elegance. Among these treasures are a remarkable pair of 1966 lounge chairs designed by Valeria Borsani and Alfred Bonetti. The spacious pool pavilion is the highlight of this house. THE LIVING AREAS Remember that for AD 100 Kelly Wearstler, every piece of information matters? Considering that the proprietors like to spend time together as a family, they wanted to have both formal and more intimate spaces in the house. Thus, one of the living rooms has a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere, with creamy tones highlighted by a bay window that brings California sunlight into the room. The formal living room is decorated with custom furniture and emphasizes the couple’s art collection, with objects that combine art and design. Highlights include a sculptural console in saffron tones, a handmade rug, a ceramic chair commissioned from artist Reinaldo Sanguino, and a special fabric upholstering the sofa and armchairs. In addition, a neon artwork by Tavares Strachan with the message “We are in this together” sits behind the sofa, while a bronze piece by Nick Cave, called Chaplet, hangs over the fireplace with an almost romantic – but politically misleading – floral structure. In the spacious kitchen, dark wood floors frame the space, which features a combination of white tones and a platinum quartzite island. “The really refined, broad stroke movement of the marble makes it so much more dynamic,” says Wearstler in an interview for Vogue Living. The designer’s ability to subtly add a mid-century modern aesthetic to each room is impressive. For the – stunning – dining room, Wearstler couldn’t have been more dedicated: vintage chairs accompany a beautiful 10-seat dining table made and stone, which contrasts perfectly with the choice of hanging chandelier, and the sideboard and cabinet set. THE MASTER BEDROOM Typical mid-century modern aesthetics, the master bedroom was designed to be a true invitation to relaxation, with warm tones of burnt ochre and golden brown. The walls have been covered with a beautiful pine tree, which offers views of the house’s landscaping, giving the feeling of being in a “tree house.” The room is an example of Wearstler’s characteristic approach, which mixes old and new elements to create a sense of depth and soul in the space. The room includes contemporary finds as well as classics, such as Mario Bellini Pianura armchairs and vintage Italian bedside lamps. Finally, stone plays a vital role throughout the house, but it is in the master suite bathroom that it stands out. Using Ceppo Beige, the element was used in the composition of almost the entire room including sinks, walls, floor and a one-piece sculpted bathtub. “We wanted to ensure that the bathtub offered the perfect comfort and form,” concludes Kelly Wearstler. The American interior designer combined the rich history of the City of the Angels with colorful global influences on this hotel that features 136 unique tiles founded in Downtown LA. A former private club that was designed by architecture studio Curlett & Beelman in the 1920s gained a new life and was turned into this eclectic 148 room hotel full of joy and different designed tiles. In fact, to realize this project, the real estate developer, The Kor Group, teamed up with Kelly and transform not only the 148-room into the whole building and made it be the Downtown LA Proper hotel we can find nowadays with Wearstler spearheading the interior design. From the designer’s point of view, the design embraces LA’s “creative scene” but also the colors and forms inspired by Mexico, Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. Besides that, obviously, the professional took into consideration the location where the hotel is, Downtown LA combining it with the previously stated inspirations to get to what she defines as “bold and eclectic choices”. As a designer, she took most of the inspiration on the communities and the history of the city and, as such, used mostly deep, warm tons to create a cheerful and colorful environment that expresses the rich culture and history of the city of Angels. There we can see a vast collection of tiles exposed on the overall hotel comprising 136 unique types of tiles, from the vintage to the custom. The experience starts from the entrance. Visitors can still see the building’s original ornate archway, which is flanked by column-like cactus in the rustic pots, where is met with a graphite reception desk designed by the ceramicist Morgan Peck (image above). More than that, the original pink and white checkerboard floor tiling was kept in this space, while the ceiling is decored with a hand-painted multicolored mural designed by Abel Macias, which drew on the fauna and flora of Mexican folktales. This eclecticism can be also spotted in the Downtown LA hotel’s guest rooms where Kelly blended contrasting elements such as chunkily-patterned headboards with smooth wooden floors, while the walls might vary within the spectrum of charcoal, mauve, dusty blue, ecru and umber. In the building can be founded three eateries including the lobby-level Caldo Verde restaurant and bar which was designed to match perfectly with the rest of this Downtown LA place. On this space was installed a collection of vintage rugs and seatings, cocoa and sandstone tiles, and jungle-like plants against a bespoke stained glass installed by Judson Studios to create the restaurant delimitation and doorway. But more than that were used some Mexican brutalist hand-carved chairs, woven pendant lights from the south of France, and stone mosaic tables to bring up to this Downtown LA Proper hotel a brighter and bolder atmosphere. The place itself is a total explosion of the history and the culture of the city which the team wanted to keep as much as possible leaving, for instance, the original integrity and fabric, like the window casing and brickwork yet elevating it with contemporary jewel tones, patterns, and plasterwork. According to the designer, Kelly Wearstler, the project aimed to embark on “a spirited exploration of materiality, color, and form, to share with guests a hyper-localized flavor of the city and create a hub for local creatives”.
